Final Spinoff: CFB "How the Hell Are They That Good?" Thread

5 teams where it doesn't seem to make sense that they should win this much.
To begin:
1. Missouri: They were an average Big 12 school. Literally every single person on Earth who is not a Missouri fan predicted disaster when they joined the SEC, and now they've reached 2 SECCGs in a row.
2. Wisconsin: They were crap before Barry Alvarez got there. Now they still consistently compete with the Ohio States, Michigans, Penn States, Michigan States of the world and Alvarez has been gone for a while.
3. Kansas State: Bill Snyder has to be one of the greatest coaches ever. And they already went to crap the first time he retired. It'll be interesting to see if it happens again.
4. Cincinnati: They were pitiful until the early 90s. Then they hit the coaching jackpot (Dantonio, Chip Kelly, Butch Jones in a row) and became a BCS team. I was stunned that they pulled Tuberville from Texas Tech.
5. Northwestern: One bowl game before 1995. 10 Bowl games since. They went from the worst program in college football to an average B1G team, sometimes better.

No Baylor?? They were doormats of the Southwest.

They were 6 on my list. But you are dealing with Texas. I don't know how they got worse than Iowa State and Kansas but they did.

This list begins and ends with Boise State.
shite conference. shite recruiting area. Far, far away from any meaningful concentrations of football talent (or people in general).
It is unreal what they've been able to do with that program.

TCU & Baylor - great coaching combined with Texas in a funk
Oregon - without Phil Knight they are a 7-9 win/year program
Boise State - They should be absolute garbage with an Idaho recruiting base

Baylor & TCU - small private religious schools that are currently head and shoulders above the 2 flagship schools

I may be biased b/c I'm a fan, but I'll to say WVU. They have a very good history for being a poor state with zero in state talent to recruit from.

They can pull talent out of PA though, especially being close to Pittsburgh.

And their rise corresponded with Pitt's decline

Somewhat true, but they're a short drive from two of the premier historical recruiting areas in the country.

They could've easily won 3 titles since the late 80s.

they recruit OH, PA, and MD but always get the leftovers from OSU, Penn State, Mich, ND, and even Pitt. They actually recruit the best in Florida believe it or not.
They have been fortunate to have great coaches. Bowden, Nehlen, Rodriguez, not a bad lineup

Missouri

In a way Boise State doesn't surprise me because they're competing with the San Jose States and Louisiana Techs of the world who have poor facilities and don't have a pot to pee in. Any school that went into that level with a balls-out desire to win was going to win.
What surprises me is that they win 11 or more games EVERY SINGLE YEAR. That's freaking amazing.

They have a national brand, like a mid-major version of Oregon.

For years, they've been kings of talent evaluating.

As for the poster that mentioned K State, they are fortunate to have a once in a lifetime type coach.
The chances of hitting on a hire like that are next to nothing, and I expect them to return to being a doormat once he retires again.

Answer to all 5 = Coaching and great program building
Which is why the statement made in the other thread that "if they haven't made it yet, they aren't making it" is such a bullshite statement. A good coach can build a program to a respectable level and you can build from there
