Mercedes team prinicipal Toto Wolff has spoken for the first time since Michael Masi was sacked as race director for F1 by the FIA, confirming both he and Lewis Hamilton are "happy" with the changes made. Masi's position as the FIA race director appeared to become untenable after the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix season finale.

Both Wolff and Christian Horner were present at the meeting, but FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem confirmed the "analysis was still going on".

An announcement finally came on Thursday with the FIA confirming that Masi would not continue as race director.

"I would like to inform you that a new race management team will be put in place starting in Barcelona for the test session," Ben Sulayem said.

"Niels Wittich and Eduardo Freitas will act alternatively as Race Director, assisted by Herbie Blash as permanent senior advisor."

It's expected that Toto would go after Masi I guess, but it's a bit sad that Hamilton and Merc would show their asses on this when they actually had to "race" for the victory and lost.

Every anti-Merc fan would have been happy to see Masi sacked for being lenient on the first lap. Yet suddenly he he is a martyr after the last lap.

So all of the laps before when he was smoking the rest of the field didn't matter? I was cheering hard for Max to win it all and even I knew that what happened that last lap was pretty bull shite.

Give it a couple of years.

Give F1 a few seasons of Red Bull dominance and all the newfound fans will be all ORANGE SMOKE MAN BAD

Not being an a-hole, but no it doesn't matter. For me I don't care about Masi, but with all of the complaining F1 fans do about parades, and time gaps etc...they actually gave us a race at the end. I'm fine with Masi getting sacked, maybe he should be, but Merc complaining about lapped cars going through and having to race is a bad look.

Is it the race directors job to get the race going again?

If the race had been red flagged and had to restart on the same tires then your argument would hold water but that's not what happened.

Lewis was at a massive disadvantage with Max on fresh tires and part of that is just shite luck that someone crashed but to act like they are mad about the ending because they "didn't want to race" is just laughable.

Yep. And he is given guidelines to make that happen.

I get it. I'd be pissed to. All I'm saying is the perception is bad.

ETA: These shitty luck things happen in racing. Yeah, Lewis was easily the faster car on fresh tires, but if that's how we're going to gauge it then we should just have everyone qualify and then call it a day, because "Diver A" has the fastest car and obviously will win.

Mercedes “raced” under the rules as written and agreed to by everyone and they were penalized for it, unintentionally or not.

Agreed upon and understood rules were thrown out and new rules put in place while a race was happening that gave a huge benefit to Red Bull, unintentionally or not.

The point you think you’re making is terrible.

Lewis could have pitted for new tires twice if I remember right.

They got it right making them race for the championship and the win.

It would have been the shittiest of all endings for that race to end under caution.

Look I’m no F1 expert so I’ll default to the post race commentary. Every single commentator/former driver agreed that when in the lead you can’t pit like every one else because you give up the lead in the race and it’s too risky to give up the lead.

Everyone behind the leader has the advantage of seeing what the leader does and reacting to it and they all got to come in for new tires.

It absolutely would have sucked for the season to end behind a safety car but every other race would have. It was just because it was the last race and the standings were so close that they rushed the decision to get only a few cars unlaced to begin racing for one lap.

Anyway you slice it Lewis got fricked. It was mostly shite luck from the crash happening so close to the end but still.

I don’t even know why we’re debating this from two months ago because I am so damn excited for this season coming up!

Drive to survive in a few weeks as well! LFG

Lewis had 2 chances to pit and take new tires. Both time verstappen pitted and took new ones. If Merc had pit Hamilton during that first wreck he would have won.

I'm not even brining up the penalty he didn't get for driving off track at the beginning.

But yes, it's over.

I'm really digging the new Williams car. Can't wait to see what George Russell brings in a real car. Also hope McLaren steps it up and makes it a 3 horse race.

I don't really care who wins. I'm not really a Hamilton fan because he comes off as a clueless douchebag much like cam Newton with 20x the money.

But I really like all the up and comers. Russell, Sainz, Norris, max, gasly.

I even like Hamilton's driving. Dude is a beast.
