Thread after thread we would argue about the future of TV dollars. It was primarily around the time of conference expansion and some of us said its shortsighted to expand for TV money.

Why would I pay $20.00 p/month to watch SportsCenter?
I mean, I can stream games for free now via my cable company, which, on an itemized level, costs less than $20.00 p/month.

I was pretty excited when I first read this.
Then I started doing the math.
After the 1st year, Comcast charges $60/month for 50mbps Internet.
Add in Sling TV and Netflix and that's another $30/month which brings the total up to $90/month.
Right now I have Comcast Internet and cable TV with the preferred package and am paying $112/month.
Is it worth having the $20 savings if my current plan includes NFL Network, ESPNU, Pac-12/SEC/B1G Networks, all of my local channels, plus tons of other channels? Not sure.

How in the world is this too expensive?
Maybe youre correct and the price point is right.
Regardless this is the first step toward a la carte programming (similar to app based TV) and is huge news!

No Apple TV and restricted to a single user.
Still has a ways to go.

How in the world is this too expensive? This plus a netflix subscription, and say the basic cable plus HBO package Cox has with their internet, I mean what else would you need? That would all cost you about $120/month at most including internet and TV options.
I guess because I get everything I need now for cheaper than the $20.00 p/month.
Also, not being able to use it on two devices at the same time would suck...

I think this will continue to become the norm
The streaming companies know the drill and know they are losing out by people sharing info

Still paying for netflix too, correct? So thats about $120 per month you pay now. Compared to $90 with this option
So youre gonna save about ~$30 per month, which is over $360 per year. Not significant savings I guess.
ETA: plus this is no contract, so one could cancel in the summer if he had zero interest in baseball, for example.

You can get HD local channels over an antenna for free. I personally just stream the others whenever Im interested in a game but I can see why some wouldnt want to do that.

Can you stream cbs online without having cable?
Posted on 1/5/15 at 2:33 pm to Croacka
If they want to restrict it, they need to restrict it to a household. I'm not tech savvy so I'm not sure how to do this, but it's a bit ridiculous to limit it to one iPad or computer.

College football you can; I do it nearly every Saturday in HD.
Not sure about other programming.

yeah, it should be restricted by ISP and not one device.

I cut the cord and without the free login credentials from a friend would be running back to cable. No way am I going to pay for this, would just rather have cable if that was my only option.
Streaming is nowhere as good as cable. No DVR option, not very easy to flip from station to station, a lot of problems with streaming such as interruptions and sometimes no access like during the College Playoffs this past Thursday.

I cut the cord a couple years ago and haven't missed a second of cable. I have NFL Game Pass, Netflix and Apple TV. That covers all of my NFL, movies and current television.

you dont sound like a millennial, which is who DISH is gearing this towards.
Some notes from the PC:
-"Millenials gather video form YouTube, Hulu, and yes, even BitTorrent" :-)
-"They're not buying music - they're using services like Spotify"
-"There is a growing gap - market capitalization has been declining in traditional pay TV for years."
-"Millenials reject the big, bigger, biggest packages. The exhausting contracts, cable installers, high fees and costs."
-We expect to provide full a la carte choose your own channels soon.
-Pause live TV, rewind, FF. From your different device

Looks like I'm getting rid of cable

when more people decide cut the cord, there is less money to go around.
And then all those cable companies will just start charging more for your internet packages.
Hell they are already putting in bandwidth caps.
They are going to make their money somehow.
Posted on 1/5/15 at 2:45 pm to rocket31
Yeah but once you add in taxes and the cost of teh ISP with the bandwidth you'd need aren't you still looking at $80-$100 for internet+espn+Netflix+HBO total?
Posted on 1/5/15 at 2:46 pm to rocket31
If this works in Canada I would pay in a heart beat. $100 for ESPN access to college football would be amazing
