U.S. Hockey team (comprised of college kids) vs. the greatest team in the world (USSR)

That will always be number one.

Fighting through adversity was never a Tyson hallmark and he barely had any adversity before the Douglas fight.

It will always be the most memorable, but statistically there have been greater upsets.

They're all pretty memorable and incredible nonetheless.

Can't think of one.USSR team had rolled the NHL All Stars 6-0 a year earlier and also beat team USA 10-3 in their final exhibition game.

They Soviets had also won 4 straight gold medals going into 1980.

This upset is the equivalent of college all Stars beating the Pittsburgh Steelers in the Super Bowl during their 70's dynasty period.

Never was in real trouble in previous fights except for Razor Ruddick and had built his resume on older washed up fighters or tomato cans.

I don't know how much you trust or like Teddy Atlas...but he always said, Tyson was a bully.

And if you punched him in the mouth...he would lose his swagger.

He said Tyson needed to win a fight in the first 3 rounds because he wasn't equipped to deal with a fighter that stood up to him.

He also said that if Tyson thought he was in a fight he couldn't win - he would do anything to get out of it. He'd quit without quitting. This is what I believe he did in the Holyfield ear-biting fight...I believe as Atlas believes that he purposefully DQ'd himself. Atlas said after Tyson-Holyfield I, Tyson wanted nothing of Holyfield as he was thoroughly out-boxed and Tyson threw wild hay-makers...but he needed the money. He played it up that he was crazy...but it was just a way to end a fight quickly without losing.

I believe that to be totally true...

But I also believe Tyson fought bravely in the Douglas fight...it's his only toe-to-toe brave fight in his career...isn't that amazing?

Because he still believed he was invincable. Once someone broke down the barrier, like the 4-minute mile, the floodgates rushed in. Tyson couldn't go the distance.

He was a bully who relied on that. Once it was shown he could be beaten, that fear he relied on went away.

Holyfield pushed that small man away bullied him for 10 rounds in their first fight.

He was about to whip Tyson into oblivion in 5 rounds in the second fight before Tyson said frick this, I'm out and forced a DQ.

Don't know about that

Both his fights with Razor Ruddick were pretty formidable...one went 7 rounds the other 12 and both fighters went "toe to toe"in each.

Throw your so called stats out the window for the 1980 hockey game.... That game had ZERO to do with any stats.... You were not even alive.... Why do you have to be such an arse all the time????

If you want to talk upsets lets look at the SB 3... An 18 point underdog beat what most were saying was the best NFL team ever put together at that point.....

5000/1 is pretty ridiculous.

Don't worry, people often think wrong all the time.

Now Sonny Liston, that's how you throw a fight. You go down early without a punch connecting.

But what you don't do is intentionally blind your opponent to try to get a knockout, only it doesn't work because the guy is so fast he can just run for a round even when he can't see you.

All I'm saying is Clay v. Liston I was not fixed.

If the second one was fixed, it makes very little sense. Clay would have no incentive, and Liston seemingly would have done a better job.

Biggest upsets in sports history:

1. Miracle on ICE
2. Tyson v. Douglas

I'm not a huge boxing fan but I do love the history. Where would Braddock vs. Baer rank in terms of upsets? The movie made it out to be an even bigger upset than Tyson/Buster.

Yeah, Leicester City was pretty unbelievable and I would have thought anyone who suggested LC would win the league before the season was either lying, joking, or one of the dumbest people on the planet. I wasn't around for the US vs. USSR hockey match so it's hard for me to judge that one.

There are several examples of teams being huge underdogs prior to a season starting that would technically be bigger upsets than Tyson Douglas
