Eight Man Football - HS Sports

I just saw some recent news about one of the high school football teams in our conference only has 13 players trying out for the team this year, and they are electing to play eight man football. I didn't know this was a trend in high school sports until I started looking into it further.
I see Michigan and Illinois already have sanctioned leagues with playoffs for this, and Ohio might be following suit. The school that is playing eight man has always had low numbers, but 13 is a new low.
Are you seeing attendance drop in your region or are numbers still strong? I am wondering if this is part of a major trend for football nationwide.

I’ve seen it in more of the smaller private schools. Not so much public high schools
The War on Football is real, man. The top end talent will not hurt, but the pure numbers will go down big time

There are towns in Texas that play 6v6, right?

I can’t really notice a difference where I am, but 6/8-man football is fun to watch. Kind of takes a half or so to get used to the rules, but it’s entertaining.
Random fact, Dallas Cowboys first round draft pick last year Leighton Vander Esch played 8-man ball. He has only played 46 career 11-man games. For reference, Kyle Murray went 43-0 as a starter in his high school career alone.

Yes.

There are a fair few privates in MS that play 8 man. Mostly delta towns where overall population numbers have dwindled. I don't believe it has trickled over into public though.

Eight Man Football
I know 7 on 7 has kind of caught on around here. But its touch football and more of an offseason tournament thing for skill position players at schools that also have regular 11 man football too.

That's not a try out. That's a "so since ya'll signed up you're on the team". As long as they fulfill the academic requirements and pass a physical they're good to go. I went to a 5A school, everyone that wanted to play and could pass a physical was at least on the team assuming we had enough equipment. It didn't mean you'd play much or do anything other than scout team. But you were a part of the team.

Correct. It is only MAIS schools, no public.
What pisses me off is the chicken shite coaches that elect to play 8 Man with a roster of kids in the high 20s. That’s not right.

Why lol
I’ve seen six man teams with 25-30 kids.
I’m sure 8 man is a bit different but in six man it typically comes down to which team has the best player. One stud can be surrounded by five awful players on the field and still mercy rule.
It’s rare you see a team that has 3-4 good players that aren’t a serious state title competitor.

There should be a roster cap to play 8 or 6 Man. I’ve seen an 8 Man Championship game where the winner dressed out almost 40.

There are a few leagues that play 8 man out here in Kansas. I officiated an 8 man playoff game last year. Some of the rural school have had to co-op to field an 8 man team. Our crew usually calls a handful of 8-man games per year. I think we have 2 on the schedule this year.
We have 6 man out here has well. I haven’t called one of those yet.

Now maybe I’m thinking how it works here in Texas and it’s different elsewhere, but the 6-man classifications here are split in two divisions with Division II schools enrollment being capped at 55 students or less. Division I can be between 56-104 students.
So there are going to be situations where some schools are loaded up on guys that particular year who dress out.

See here any school can declare for 8 Man. Then they are sorted by total number of males, 8th through 11th grade. They are then split into two classifications.

My son’s school, all boys 7-12, has always fielded 7th and 8th grade teams...I think they may have 6 7th graders. Seems to be going to shite. Hopefully they’ll mix em and my boy gets a shot...at least at the kicking duties.

One of my roommates in college now coaches at one of the mais 8 man schools. He is one of those chicken shite coaches .
Of course his excuse was 7-8 guys who were not planning on playing decided they wanted to play a few days after the deadline to go to 8 man. Not sure how true that is though.

I actually like the idea. If structured right, it will allow younger kids to be involved in the sport without exposing them to head injuries.

I will say this, most of them are legit 8 Man, but there are a few that dropped because they got tired of St Joe whipping that arse.

Yeah I didn’t really mean trying out; just “going out” for the team.
