I believe they restructured the deal where they can cut him after this season

They can cut him any time. The dead money is still there. They just spread it out longer.

I agree with you, I thought the Saints should have grabbed another QB. Why put all your eggs in one basket when you can draft two and have them develop and compete against each other. Redskins could have said we got our guy (RG3) and moved onto other positions but they grabbed Cousins and he ended up being the better of the two.

Maybe GM/HC got their guy in the
3rd, then Jimmy jumped in and made the SS pick on a whim

I heard a stat that something like 58 QBs started an NFL game last year.

And at least one third of them were dogshit.

Are there any examples of this actually being a successful strategy?

It’s not really that great of strategy when one of the picks is on a short arse QB who can’t throw from a compact pocket. The Gabriel pick was laugh out loud bad.

I'm not really sure it's been tried, but I could be wrong.

No lol. There’s a reason why no team has ever done what the OP said was a good strategy lol

But this isn’t a scenario you were calling for.

Like I said. There’s a reason why it’s never been done lol

Yes, the Redskins drafted RG3 and Kirk Cousins in the same year. Once RG3 got injured Kirk took off

Yeah
This is a shite arse idea

Maybe in a situation where a team is legitimately “a qb away” from success
Like…. If Jalen Hurts announced his retirement the day before the draft
But teams that loaded are rare

I’d love to see teams try it though. It would be entertaining.

Just not the Bucs, because I want them to succeed.

Cousins after RG3 is the most recent example.

Kenny Stabler was a plan B pick for the Raiders after they drafted another guy in the first round.

The 1971 draft was loaded with QB talent and the classes before and after were weak so the Oilers took Dan Pastroni and Lynn Dickey, both of whom had decent but unremarkable careers.

Roger Staubach was actually the third QB the Cowboys picked but that comes with an asterisk because he had to do his Navy service.

Interesting trivia: The New York Jets drafted Joe Namath in 1965 as the first overall pick in the American Football League (AFL) draft. In the same year, the Jets also drafted John Huarte, a quarterback from Notre Dame who had won the Heisman Trophy in 1964, in the second round of the AFL draft. Additionally, they selected Bob Schweikert, a quarterback from Virginia Tech, in the sixth round.

If you need a qb, pick more than one. Many people felt Namath might have knee problems, and thought Huarte would be the future of the franchise.
