USA dominates most Olympic sports because we are superior athletes for the most part. I think it's reasonable to assume the top US athletes can win a World Cup.

I'm curious if US Soccer Teams (MLS) are making good money and can afford to entice some of these guys.

Ashton Eaton, who on top of being the world champion, world record holder, and Olympic gold medalist in the decathlon is routinely pointed out by jaded doctors as one of the only clean guys in track and field.

A guy like Eaton isn't who people are talking about when they say that we need better athletes. They mention NFL/NBA players usually. Big strong fast leaping ability, etc. I'm sure there are literally thousands of people in Brazil who are bigger, faster, stronger, and can jump higher than Neymar but he is the star. Same goes for Messi in Argentina, James in Colombia, etc.

Might want to check on what Euro league Soccer players make before making a statement like this

Yeah, you really can't equate athleticism to size. I think it's a great hypothetical discussion to have; imagine guys like Russell Westbrook or Speedy Noil growing up wanting to be soccer players.

right, I fully agree with you that there are many people in Brazil who are stronger and can jump higher than Neymar. Maybe not a ton who are faster, but there are those as well.

Same applies for James Rodriguez, Messi, Robben (although he is damn fast, I would be shocked if he is under 4.55 with the right amount of training), etc. And when we talk about guys like Xavi, Cesc, Gerrard, Modric, etc., those guys are by no means the world class athletes of their countries.

The only thing I disagreed with in your initial post was listing heights and weights for some of the guys. I mean Eaton has a very normal height and weight and he would fricking destroy most NFL and NBA stars in tests of strength, agility, speed, etc.

I know it has been mentioned a few times, but speed isn't the U.S. problem. Our skill level isn't anywhere close the top teams. We can't pass the ball down field on these guys worth a shite. The only times we were getting shots on goal was when we went all out to try and score and Belgium scored 2 on us because of it. Klinsman really is a brilliant coach. His strategy is what kept us in it at all IMO. We literally sat back and tried to play defense and had to defend like 20 shots on goal. Had we been in attack mode all game they probably would have won 3 to nill in regulation.

That's because we have the best training facilities, coaches, infrastructure, etc. Baseball was invented here and there are a couple Caribbean countries with 1% of our population that can put a team out there that can beat our best. It's because they have access to US scouting, coaching, etc. It's not because they have better athletes than we do playing baseball.

Yes, but think about how much better those guys would be if they also had superior athleticism.

They are already the best in the world. That's like saying how much better would Peyton Manning be if he was a little bit faster? Or how good would Tim Duncan be if he could jump a little higher? Do you ever hear anyone ask that question? No because skill outweighs athleticism.

Never, but Belgium is probably 5% of our Pop and dominated us today IMO. Again it isn't because of athleticism though IMO. Those guys were clearly a lot more skilled then we were. I think Klinsman can coach as good as anyone out there and did a fantastic job to have us a blown shot in the 89th minute away from moving on today.

The best soccer player in the world made 73 million last year. In the US a few players made north of 4 million. How much should they increase the pay scale?
