Guys started wearing sneakers with tuxes in either the late 70's or early 80's. I remember a frat formal I went to, that was the first time I saw it live. It was mostly guys who were younger than me. They looked like they were having a good time. I didn't have any expensive sneakers of my own to wear like that back then. I graduated college in 1983, so I'm talking about seeing this around 79-82.

It's not a look that bothers me. I think the white Jordan 11's with the black patent leather trim look great with a black tux. Looks like spats that the old 1920's gangsters wore. If I didn't have to wear 4E shoes, I'd buy a pair of those white 11's with the black patent leather.
