Do NFL GMs put enough stock in durability

I know it is obviously something that is taken into account. But it seems like many teams get caught up in talent or a big name and don’t place enough emphasis on durability. If I was a GM, that is the number one thing I am looking at, “the best ability is availability”, now if a guy had one bad injury like Brady or Brees early in his career, that happens and is fine. But you could not force a guy like Clowney or even Fournette onto me if I was an NFL GM, unless the price was just through the floor low. Do y’all notice guys that are hurt more games than they play still signing huge contracts too often?

Depends. I think they do on the middle class of players, but for the upper tier I think they use it as leverage to get someone cheaper.

Yea, which is legitimate to do. I mean it doesn’t matter how great you are if you aren’t there. And I hate to judge someone based on that, because it’s not their fault, but it is a business. Clowney signed for like over 13 million dollars this season. Why do that? He is literally always hurt, and there are many other examples as well.

Also clowney has never had a double digit sack season

He has played atleast 13 games for the past 5 seasons

What on earth are you talking about.

Just looked it up, you are right, seems like he is always battling something though, also I guess I would have expected more production out of him with his talent if he has been there consistently. Maybe JJ Watt would have been a better example.

For one year. He didn't come close to the longterm big money he wanted.

He definitely hasn't had the sack numbers that were expected of him and he does have a history of injuries but he has been an elite run stopper and has been near the top of the league in TFLs numerous times. But you are right, this isn't his first time dealing with the injury bug since his latter days in Carolina.

It's not. He's a Hall of Famer and greatest player in franchise history who started getting hurt out of nowhere. He never missed a game his first 5 years then he was hurt for two years, had another uninjured all-pro year, then got hurt and missed half a season.

If you aren’t going to pay JJ Watt then you aren’t going to last long as an NFL GM

He didn’t miss a game his first 5 seasons.

Good luck with your strategy for predicting injuries

He played 32 games in 4 seasons between 2016-2019. That’s 32 out of 64. I still believe GMs don’t put enough stock into durability. Or on problem guys like Josh Gordon, Antonio Brown etc. How many teams has Josh Gordon been kicked off of? It’s unreal.

how can you put stock into something that's impossible to know? Everyone said Adrian Peterson was "made of glass" and he was pretty durable in his NFL career, 1 knew injury late in one season.

Clowney or even Fournette

aren't those guys on 1 year deals?

Antonio Brown ended up owing the Raiders money after all the fines he incurred. And his pro-rated, one year contact with the Bucs is paying him like $750k assuming he plays in the rest of their games. Josh Gordon hasn't made more than a million dollars in a year since 2012. He's been signing 1-2 year contracts since he was first kicked out of the league and for right at the league minimum, and none of his recent contracts have included guarantees. He's made a grand total of just under $4 million from 2013 to the present.

Contracts aren’t signed in hindsight

He was one of the most durable players in the league his first 5 years.

How do you supposed the Texans were supposed to know that information during contract negotiations that took place 2 years before he ever missed a start?

Many of them do, but it only takes 1 GM to sign a player to a big contract.

Only 1 team willing to take a chance on a player.

Miami taking Tua with the 5th pick this year, I believe.

Tua is a fantastic player but, he has a history of injuries. He missed a couple of games this season due to injury.

But again, all it takes is 1 team to take that chance.
