Do football defenses practice with a referee standing in the middle of the field?

Just rewatching the National Championship Game and noticed Grant Delpit curling around the referee. I’m wondering if they maybe put something representing a referee out there so that the players get better at working around him.

I could definitely see a coach standing there on each play, whether to simulate a ref or to watch the development of the lines.

They have REF's at literally every practice for colleges.

We did for inter-squad scrimmages, but we definitely didn't have like several real refs just standing around waiting for us to go from position stations to full team H2H practice.

No they don't.

Depending on what they're running or simulating a coach might be in that position. Usually an OLine coach or assistant. Sometimes have seen them use managers as well, depending on what they're wanting to do.

I literally don’t think you understand the definition of the word literally.

I mean, I played football at a single-A (5A being the largest) HS in my state, one team had only 32 players, and we always had a coach in the vicinity of the umpire position during scout offense, which takes up the majority of in-season practices.

No college-level player should be blindsided by the umpire standing there during a game.

I seem to remember the GA that would give the plays for the scout team might have stayed out there where the umpire would be. But that was a long time ago.
