But if you're trying to avoid discussing a fake person wouldn't you deliberately be vague?
I'm simply presenting possible explanations.
Not everything people do will seem 100% logical in retrospect. People are generally logical, but looking back everybody says and does things that wouldn't quite make complete logical sense if you are trying to piece together facts to prove some kind of thesis.

He probably wasn't feeling any heat about it at the time, and the idea of this thing blowing up into a national story about his girlfriend not being dead was probably not even on his radar.
You have to remember that this is just a college kid with an online relationship.
He probably wasn't thinking his personal stuff was going to blow up into national news.
He probably wasn't really feeling a need to completely divert attention from the issue because he was probably not expecting anything to come from it.
He just pulled out his phone and fired off a tweet expressing himself.

Update (2:34 a.m.): ESPN has removed all references to the woman claiming to be Lennay showing up at the team hotel from its online story. There is no explanation, note, or correction in their story.
Sounds like somebody has more to tell in this on going saga of deception lies and hoaxes. Hope it is the big booooom that slaps ESPN in the face

At this point I can buy into he just tripped into a huge arse hoax without any knowledge...but he has told more than just a lie here and there for sure
So far out of all of this there are 2 things I find the most interesting for some reason and would love for him to expound on it:
1. In an interview he did in mid-November he mentioned that her letters to him before every game were creepy, wonder why he would use that word to describe the situation
2. In the interview he did with Schapp he said that going to visit her in the hospital never crossed his mind...really? It never crossed his mind to visit his dying GF who was his motivation and inspiration for a considerable amount of time?
So far out of all of this there are 2 things I find the most interesting for some reason and would love for him to expound on it:

How would Roniah be part of Manti's social circle?
Manti and his girlfriend were seriously talking for 4 months. Maybe a little longer, I'm not sure.
But it's not like he's going to get a lot of chances to meet her when she lives across the country.

Just thought about another huge question that needs answering, where is his cousin that brought Manti and Lennay together? In the SI article he said that Lennay was a friend of his cousins, is this mysterious cousin in on it? The cousin must have vouched for Lennay at some point.

Then you get all defensive and pissed off and name call when more logical explanations start to come to light.
Sure, there are still questions that need to be answered, but we can easily see now that Manti was the victim of a hoax, and also lied about some things for his benefit. Whether it was to avoid embarrassment, judgement, etc., or whatever.
It wasn't some grand conspiracy on his part to hide his sexual orientation, or to win a Heisman, or anything silly like that.

And if this was a lie/embellishment to save face from being duped, why bring someone completely outside the hoax in?
I'm sure his real life cousin was all like "what the frick" when Manti claimed he met a person who didn't exist through him.

No, he's supposedly known her for a number of years and they became a couple in oct 11. So she tells him over the phone about roniah and he meets him ASAP w/o wondering why do I get to meet this douche and not the love of my life

Deadspin's article has a source claiming they're buddies, there's a picture of him with roniah's sister. And seeing as how manti's uncle has met roniah and that the tuiasasopo's are "Polynesian royalty" it's really not hard to imagine them knowing one another

I know the initial story was that Roniah went to HS with Te'o. Has that since changed?
