Abreu’s avg is .073. How long does this organization allow him to embarrass himself out there?

And he's not a premium defender either. What do you do with the guy? Just stretch his contract pay out 4-5 more years and you can get rid of him now.

I've seen Josh Bell suggested as a replacement. Marlins are not a playoff ball club, Bell is playing terrible with 1 more year left on his deal.

You could give the Marlins Abreu, a Cuban player for the Cuban Miami crowd, pay the difference and spread it out, bring in Bell who is hitting .192, a huge upgrade at 1B.

You can’t just do that

I’m not sure the Astros have a prospect package to make up the difference to get Abreu’s contract to zero value. If they get rid of him, which they should and probably will at some point this season, they are eating the rest of this year and next year and releasing him.

Does MLB not allow restructuring? Obviously Abreu would have to agree to it as well.

I know they have to pay and it’s not my money, but I still don’t understand why they don’t look at Belt or Cron.

I’m not sure I’ve ever seen an MLB contract restructured. They are gonna pay Abreu what he’s owed. They should 100% sign Brandon Belt but I doubt they will

Based on a quick search the MLB does allow restructuring but it has to be approved by the players union and it almost never happens because theres no incentive since MLB contracts are all guaranteed money.

NFL players typically restructure to get more guaranteed money.

Maybe Abreu will penalize himself and restructure.

Union wouldn't allow it anyways.

However, the MLBPA will not allow a player to restructure their contract unless it is to their benefit, meaning the restructured contract would have to pay that player an equal or greater amount of money than their original deal.

In summary, MLB teams can restructure player contracts with the approval of the MLBPA, but the process is more limited than in other sports, and the restructured contract must be at least as beneficial to the player as their original contract.

At least we didn't sign Blake Snell. That looks like it would have been another Crane bust.

Same here. So frustrating. A position of massive need with a big upgrade available and we don’t jump on it. I’m really down on Crane. I still say he was broken by the scandal. I don’t know what Brown’s capabilities are but we’ll never know with the apparent hamstringing of him.

Appreciate the research. I was thinking maybe we could restructure and have an Astros version of Bobby Bonilla day.
