quote:Get used to it. More than half the missed calls last year were high strikes that were called balls. I'm sure you're aware that the umpires had a few off-season meetings.
Check out Derrek Lee's 2nd AB...got called out on strikes on a pitch at the letters. I know, technically, that's a strike, but I've never seen it called that high before.

I heard that about 4-5 years ago. They called them high for about 2 months, then went back to the strike zone they've called for 30 years. That's what will happen this time too.

Hey, can you go back and check Theriots at bat from yesterday in the 9th inning for me? He got fricked on that strikeout.

Lee's third strike was an incorrect call, says my coworker who scored the game. Didn't ask about Theriot, though Theriot has a reputation in the office for never getting strikes called on him ever. Funny to hear that he got rung up.

Do you guys have other camera angles than the TV cameras to evaluate the umps calls? One from directly behind the pitcher would be ideal, IMO. Also, one thing I can't stand is that box ESPN uses. It assumes the same strike zone for every hitter. Tell me you guys don't use something like that.

We have three cameras: one in center field, next to the camera that shows you the game on tv; one either left or right of the plate, perpendicular to the trajectory of the pitch (to determine height); and one way up and behind the umpire (sometimes directly above the plate if the stadium has a roof).
As far as the box we use, we don't use ESPN's, nor vice-versa. I draw my own strike zone using the three cameras I described. I draw a different one for every pitch with some software program we have. The width of the zone is fixed since it's the width of the plate (+ 1.5 baseball widths, making it permissible for an umpire to call a "correct" strike if it's a bit off the plate), and the height of the strike zone is the back crease of the batter's back knee to 18" above his belt.
We're really meticulous about it.

Interesting. Why don't you guys use the rule book definition (upper limit is halfway between top of pants and shoulders (18" is probably pretty close) and lower limit is hollow beneath the knee caps)? It's likely very close, but why make up a different zone than the one in the rule book? Things would be more uniform that way.
