New Orleans Catholic and private schools kids have been going to Destin in masses for years now. Sophomores, juniors, and seniors throughout the several complexes in a certain area. Each group has severals parents and most kids are drinking and possibly using other substances, with or without parental supervision. I know the years I went (01-03) and my sister went after there was never an incident like this. The only things were fights with the Niceville kids and the occasional kid drinking way too much. So maybe the kid had never gotten drunk but I don't blame his parents for letting him go.

+1000 I went to Brother Martin like im assuming you did to. I was in Destin in 06 for spring break and our whole senior class seemed like it was there and the same for Jesuit, Dominican, Mt Carmel, Rummel etc.. There was a ton of drinking but noone died. This is ashame, but letting a kid go to destin for spring break isnt a big deal imo.

How far are we talking about traveling? Was it like 5 hours or 12 hours? Different going from Ohio to Florida, and Louisiana to Florida, IMO.

true. It was only about 4 hours, but if the kid and all his friends wanted to go to the beach whats the problem with traveling?

The further you go the less familiar you are with the area most likely, the further from your parents safety net you are, the more likely you are to do something dumb, IMO.

Cannot argue with that.

I agree with the poster who said it's commonplace for local kids to go to Florida on spring break. I did it as well.

I don't agree that because James traveled from further away he was more likely to do something dumb. 4 hours seemed like a long ways away for me when I went, but it sure didn't factor in whether I was going to do something dumb. I seriously doubt James thought the same.

The bottom line is that, from the reports, he was intoxicated and leaning over the rail yelling at people on a different balcony. Tragically, he lost his balance and fell. I've done MUCH dumber things when I've been drunk than yell at people on another balcony. It's a real shame what happened and he had to pay the ultimate consequence. Sounds like he was a tremendous person and player.

we have all been in your shoes before, one day you will realize how frickin stupid and ignorant you were in HS

This.
adamwilson remember this because it will happen to you too. I've only been out of HS a year and have already come to this realization. Don't get me wrong I'm still young and dumb and do stupid shite. The difference is I'm out on my own now and I've had to grow up some, I know my limits more than I did in HS, I know that I'm not invincible, I know that these kinds of things could happen to me so I don't put myself in those situations. Everybody is stupid in HS, and nobody realizes it until they are out of HS.

But seriously to get back on topic, this is a terrible terrible tragedy and some of you should be ashamed at the way you are posting on this thread. A 17 year old kid is DEAD and two parents are burying their child and people are actually going to come on here and start bickering? That's messed up.
RIP Matt James.
