Hey fellas, some buddies and I are heading up/down/over to Clemson for the Notre Dame game on 11/4 and I was looking for some tips from those in the know.

We're staying at a cabin on the lake just north of town, I think about a 10-15 minute drive away. We're going to start rolling into town Friday afternoon and were thinking we'd check out the scene downtown Friday afternoon and early evening, grabbing drinks and food, and then head back to our cabin for a bonfire.

Gameday is likely pretty open and is going to be dependent on when this game kicks off. If it's a night game we may hang around our place to watch some of our games in the morning and then head in, if it's an early game it's gonna be more of a scramble.

So my questions are:
- Any good places to eat Friday night? I assume it'll be very difficult given how small the town is and the limited options
- Any bars that will have a good "night before" vibe that we should check out?
- Any Clemson traditions to experience either the night before or on gameday (obviously we'll catch their entrance and Howards Rock)
- We're likely going to go for "just get me in" tickets which will probably have us surrounded by ND fans (not great)...are those upper corners ridiculously high and a bad viewing experience?
- Without an established place to land for pregame we may end up doing what I call "the Mobile Tailgate(tm)", where we pack disposable coolers and find a fun area, set down our coolers, and start partying...a) is that going to be ok and keep us free from open container tickets, and b) what would the fun area(s) be?

Also, to add:
- We all hate Notre Dame
- None of us went to Clemson
- We can contribute bourbon and whatever else if there's an event we would be able to get into, if anything up there works that way
- While Greenville is allegedly awesome, we want to be in Clemson the whole weekend to drink it in

Looking forward to is as it'll be my first experience at a big time southern football game and I'm getting to hang out with buddies coming in from a few different places.

Friday night restaurants:
-The ESSO Club (Sports Bar in a 1920s gas station across from the stadium)
-The Smoking Pig of Pendleton (Really good BBQ joint with nice outdoor area/bar. 15 minutes from Clemson but worth it.)
-Calhoun Corner’s, Pixie and Bill’s, Rick Erwin’s (nicer restaurants/steakhouses probably need reservations. None are downtown)
-There are a good many restaurants downtown and most bars serve food. Problem is they change about every 5 years so I can’t really recommend one.

Friday Night Vibe:
-Tiger Town Tavern
-TDs
-Backstreet’s Pub and Grill

Traditions:
-Go downtown Friday night. Extremely walkable. It’s small and condensed so you can hit it all.
-The Tigerwalk (brand new axis/park where the team walks through the tailgates/fans a few hours before game to enter the locker room. They stay in Greenville the night before so they get off buses in their suits.)
-Really explore campus during tailgating. Get out of the parking lots and into the trees and campus landscape. People tailgate all over.
-Bowman Field. First football field. Heisman coached there. Was also used during Clemson’s military school days. It’s basically the front of campus with Tillman Hall being the first building built near by. You can’t miss it when you cross from downtown to campus.
-The ESSO. As mentioned before it’s right across from the stadium. They have live music and a big screen outside. Lots of canned beer sold. You don’t even have to go inside the building.
-Definitely try and be inside the stadium 30-40 minutes before kick to check out the pregame traditions.
-Gather at the Paw. Clemson has always allowed player’s family, alumni and fans to go onto the field after the game. It’s not exactly rushing the field but during a win it definitely is more exciting. It’s really cool to stand on the 50 yard line of a 80k stadium. Kids toss footballs, players and coaches hang out for a bit and mingle (not so much during a loss). If you’re in the lower bowl you should do it.

Seats:
The uppers are steep! The views are pretty good though as you’re not as far from the field as you would be with a more gracious angle.

Tailgating:
-You can freely drink open containers anywhere on campus. If you tell people that y’all are neutral observers they’ll more than likely be glad to feed you and show you a good time.
-Do not have an open container downtown. They will ticket you. Hwy 93 (Old Gville Hwy) and Perimeter Road are the boundaries of campus.

Warning! Clemson does not sell alcohol in the stadium so drink up! They do allow you to leave at halftime and come back in so make friends right outside the gates or stash your cooler in some shrubs.

This is a fantastic response. Thanks man!

I may need hit that BBQ place on my way out of town Sunday.

I hope the field "rushing" would happen if they win a big game like that. I get the sense ticket prices might continue to come down so we may spend a bit more to be be in the lower level...gonna be louder down there so it'd be worth it.

We actually could never drink in the stadium in Madison and couldn't leave at halftime either. I think I've only been to one or two B1G stadiums where you could, so that's fine.

We're likely gonna Uber down there so everyone can have a good time, but I'm thinking getting back to our place at who knows what time might be interesting.

I assume visiting fans are mostly in the upper decks in the corners?

ETA: Looks like they're opposite the student section that corner. Smart

Up until this year Clemson has always put opposing fans (tickets bought through the school) in the lower bowl along with their band. Clemson ticket holders have started to complain away fans get better seats than they do so they have started to split away tickets between lower and the upper corners.

Yeah, Uber’s going to be a challenge leaving. They basically turn all traffic lanes to leave out of campus. You might have better luck walking back downtown and trying to get a ride or wait it out until the traffic is gone.

Has hot girls. However, Clemson’s an odd, weird place. I can’t quite put my finger on it though. You may pick up on the same.

It reminded me of a bigger Louisiana Tech and a nicer Ruston. The campus is nothing special - their main building is okay, I guess. It reminded me of Auburn.

Esso Club is a must, but will be extremely crowded. Same with TD. Sloan Street Bar is another good dive right by.

Lake Hatwell or whatever it’s called is nice and all, it’s just a different place. It felt very insular. Not “cliquish” in a snooty way…just secluded. You’re so close to Asheville, Athens, and Greenville, yet, I guess socially, you’d never know it - if that makes any sense.

I'm glad I got the lodging hooked up nice and early. I figured it's extremely limited and we didnt want to have to come in from Greenville on gameday or be staying in a Motel 6 by the interstate.

Report back on your experience. As a neutral, I’m interested.

Don’t get me wrong, they’ve got a good environment and their fans are more than welcoming, however the whole town and campus just gave off this entire insular, secluded “we’re in this together” aura.

That’s a pretty portion of the state though. Scenery wise, I much prefer that area - Clemson, Greenville, Spartanburg area to the low country areas. I actually may prefer Greenville over Charleston as well. Both are nice, just personal preferences .

ETA: How’s games at Notre Dame? Always wanted to checkout a game there. Kind of like Wrigley and Fenway just for CFB. I missed my opportunity in 1998 - although we lost, LSU gave them a hell of a game. Hopefully we’ll have something soon.

ETA again: Apparently I need to get glasses. I completely glossed over the “Badger” part of your name and the “we all hate Notre Dame” part.

It's amazing. Was just up there staying on Lake Keowee with friends not that long ago for vacation. Gorgeous lake, and the homes on it

I've never been, only seen them live against the Badgers at Soldier Field, but it is only about a 2 hr drive from Chicago to South Bend. I just never made it to a game when I lived in Chicago.

The more I hear you talk about the environment and vibe the more I'm getting this idea of what I think a BYU game would be like, just a much bigger stadium.

It’s just secluded and hard to get to. Not much goes in, not much goes out type of thing. The college is the town. Auburn somewhat has that feel … “Auburn family” bullshite. Clemson is like to the umpteenth degree

Bump for game week. Never would have thought this game would be a noon kick but here we are. Gonna be a compressed pregame.

Tigers looking like a tire fire right now.

Go to Greenville instead

Clemson is the oddest college town I've been in

No way, we're getting the Clemson experience good or bad.

Also, Cocktober was not the rousing success I was expecting. Pretty sure SC went 0 for the month.

Clemson will get rolled. Wouldn't have expected that before the season. Still, it must be cool to get out to campuses that aren't yours. There are a few places outside the SEC I would like to see a game at.

I learned today the bars might not serve booze before 10?! This could be something we need to plan for given the noon kick.

Ok, another early kick question...if we decided to forgo the bars before the game and just take a disposable cooler to a fun tailgating area, where would that area or cross streets be?

Go next to the basketball arena. Tons of tailgate spots there and you have the added benefit of having access to the bathrooms in the arena. It’s about 1000’ from the west end zone
