Y! Sources: Nearly a decade after leading Detroit to title, Chauncey Billups agrees on a two-year deal with Pistons. LINK

That 04 Pistons team is my favorite non-Bulls team in my years of watching the NBA

I think Detroit makes the playoffs this year.

great move by Dumars. he's the type of guy they'll need in that locker room.

still doesn't erase the stupid move by Dumars in trading him away.

Rip was waived yesterday. I wonder if he tries to sign with them also.

What a chump name.
Hard to take a man seriously named Chauncey.

Chauncey is one of my favorite sports names. Right behind Jabari.

at the time Billups was talking about leaving so, he wanted to get something out of it, plus the added benefit of an expiring contract.

He didnt want the situation to turn into Ben Wallace, when he left for Chicago.

Also him and Billups remained friends throughout the whole situation.

unless Billups was gonna force a trade, he couldn't leave. he still had a couple yrs left on his deal. he's even said that he and Dumars had a strained relationship for some time after the trade. I always thought Dumars did it primarily to pass the PG torch to Stuckey (and put together a younger roster in general).

some of that is true, but Stuckey was never a true PG and is one of the most emotionally fragile guys in the league.
however Billups was talking about leaving, after Brown was fired. Which came from ownership.

well around the same time (I think the same week) Dumars traded Chauncey, he gave Rip an extension. and he had no intention of keeping Iverson around long term, so where else was Stuckey gonna play?

Denver's GM at the time:

quote:

“Two teams had one common problem, or challenge,” Warkentien said. “I think the Pistons looked at (Rodney) Stuckey and saw him as the point guard of tomorrow, and you have an All-Star in Chauncey who was in his way.

LINK

I was never all that big on Stuckey (def not as a PG), but I thought if Dumars felt he had to move someone to get him minutes, I might have dealt Rip first.

I agree I would have dealt Rip as well. He was past his prime.

The big issue after that trade was using that freed up cap room for Ben Gordon and Charlie Villanueva. I loved Chauncey at the time, but trading him to Denver for AI's expiring deal made sense.

both guys where major mistakes, Charlie V was never in shape and Ben Gordon is a major pot head.

This is partially correct...although Joe D spent way too long thinking Stuckey could actually be a starting PG.

That said, the Pistons roster was stale and Billups was the one player with actual trade value. They wanted to position themselves to be a major player in FA, but he made a major miscalculation in who he would actually be able to acquire.

There was also the simple fact Joe D always wanted Iverson in a Pistons uniform and that was a way to finally get him.

this is not really true, it was more about his expiring contract.
However, he almost had Kobe in 2007.
