Boxing Questions

After watching last night's fight, I have a few, generic questions.
-- Who was the older man, in glasses, that was on the floor leaning against the ring? If you noticed in the 4th round, his hand was on the mat and he had a pen and pad. Judge? Doctor?
-- I enjoyed last night, and how does one get into boxing more? Any good websites, forums, etc. that you'd suggest? When do fights typically happen? What channel? How do find out more about the sport?

Ring Magazine is the best place for articles, news and rankings. They used to do a mail Monday thing where an analyst will answer questions in depth from fans, not sure if that’s still a thing though. Dan Rafael(ESPN) on Twitter is a good source for news and updates. However I don’t always agree with his analysis. In terms of watching right now there’s DAZN and PBC(Premier Boxing Champions). The days of HBO and Showtime dominated boxing are over. DAZN has its own streaming service which is very affordable with a stable of great fighters (Canelo, GGG, Danny Jacobs). PBC is on ESPN, FS1 and a multitude of other channels, and they have probably the largest stable of fighters under them. In terms of when fights happen it kinda just depends on circumstances. Canelo always fights on Mexican Independence Day and Cinco De Mayo weekend. Many fights concentrate around those times as well, but overall it’s kinda all over the place.

Watching fights brought me closer to my stepdad. We didn’t have a lot of money during the late 70’s and 80’s but we would go to Lafayette to watch the three or four ring fights with amateurs. I forget what they called it.
My stepdad would take a small black and white television with rabbit ears to work and watch Saturday afternoon fights on ABC.
We got with some folks and bought the Durán/ Sugar Ray fight. I loved Sugar Ray Leonard.
Southern university hosted some pre-Olympic trial bouts I believe around 1984 ? Can’t remember.
Fun times with my stepfather. Rip

I was born in 52 and I can vividly remember watching "Friday Night Fights" live from Madison Square Garden on an old black and white TV with my dad and uncle. They were brought to you by Gillette and almost every commercial was about their blades and shaving.
One of my uncles was a fleet lightweight champ during WWII when in the Navy and he had a lot of stories to tell and encouraged me when I got into amateur boxing in the mid 60's as a teen.
The best gym in the N.O. area at that time was St. Mary's in the Quarter. That was where Tony Licata trained as an amateur and eventually turned pro and went on to have a very good career in the ring as a pro---meeting Carlos Monzon for the middleweight title at Madison Square Garden. Unfortunately, Tony got stopped in that fight, but against Monzon, almost all of his opponents got stopped as he was one of the great Middleweight Champions of all time.

You are an old geezer like me. I remember Teenage Tony and then Two Gun Tony. New Orleans was a good boxing town back then. Jerry Pellegrini, the boxing barber, and Percy Pugh are others I remember.

Jerry was my barber back in the day when he had his first shop in Arabi on LeBeau St. right off St. Claude Ave.
I think Jerry had the potential to be a lot better than his record indicates, but he never really took training very seriously, and that is not a good thing for a boxer.
I would often see Percy Pugh doing road work back then.
Jerry and Percy fought twice, once in 67 and again in 68 and Percy won both by UD. Percy was a pretty good boxer, but certainly no KO puncher with only 5 KO's in 77 fights.
