What?
The very least he could have done was participate in the '72 Olympics but he was too much of a bitch.
Handed the Soviets the gold by not playing

Dude is a national treasure, not sure what to tell you here.
Also, I am not watching this live. That post was a general stance.

TYFYS?
What service?
He bowed out when given the chance to represent his country.

In fairness, US hired a fossil to coach the team.

The belief persists to this day that the defensive-minded Iba, 68 at the time after coaching the United States to gold medals in 1964 and 1968, was the wrong man for the job, installed only because the various warring factions in American basketball at the time couldn't bear to come to the easy consensus and give the job to UCLA's ultra-deserving John Wooden or an up-and-comer at North Carolina named Dean Smith.
And with no Wooden, there would also be no Bill Walton, who didn't want to play for anyone else at that stage of his life after an unpleasant experience at the 1970 World Championship and remains so dismayed by the whole saga today that the famously talkative Walton uncharacteristically told ESPN.com this week that he'd prefer not to discuss the matter.
Also they asked the greatest Collegiate player at the time to try out for the team.

Pretty sure it was the rule for all college players who wanted to represent
their country.Im not sure Walton participates even if they waived the rules for him.

The thing I remember most about Walton was that the no dunk rule was in effect when they beat Memphis State in the final, where he had 44 points I think, including 12 or 15 2 or 3 foot bank shots.
It was like a man playing with little kids and not dunking because he didn't want to hurt them.

Things that let you know this was in fact a Bill Walton documentary
1. The Dead
2. A quote from him saying that he wanted to play in the NBA but UCLA was the dream
3. A stray "Greg Ostertag is the greatest center in the history of Western Civilization" while at the table with his family

And the family were rolling their eyes.
I enjoyed him visiting his old house and neighborhood, and comparing artificial joints with ex-teammates.

Couldn't believe it when they started talking about his mom, and she was still kicking. Or at least still knitting.

Interesting that a family that didn't emphasize sports at all produced two pro athletes.

Watched parts 3 and 4 last night, and it got better for me. They got into the era I can actually remember watching.
Robert Parish, Chief, had me laughing my arse off, talking about "William" trash talking and practicing with Bird and McHale.
Someone put a mic and camera on Chief and make another show. He's a treasure.
