What do our resident experts think? Do we get #13? I believe he has a better the average chance but the 1 hole is cause for concern. There are questions about his ability to get the 1 1/2 but he has Secretariat in his pedigree on both sides. This is through two daughters which is how the large heart gene is passed. Not saying he has the large heart but there is a possibility.

Based on the finishes of the first 2 legs I’m expecting him to get caught at the Belmont and come up short. Really hope he wins though, that was really cool to see a TC finally with American pharaoh.

Hard for me to get excited this year.

But I’m getting really tired of trying to explain to people that limiting the Preakness and Belmont to just horses who ran in the races before is a bad idea.

They are stand alone grade 1 races and to restrict further than age would strip of grading and importance. Plus, it’s just dumb. The triple crown is supposed to be hard.

Bunch of fricking participation trophy people

All true.

I haven't been really impressed.
He's had favorable conditions in both the Derby and Preakness for his particular style.
Had the Preakness gone for another 1/8th, I think he gets caught.

Having been at the Derby to see Pharoah.
My feelings have somewhat changed regarding the triple crown.
Before that year, I wanted desperately to see one in my lifetime. And with so many coming close, it made the tension even more exciting.
But now that I've seen one.... AND I was there to see him.
I now, somewhat, don't want to see another because it feels like it would diminish how special that day and year was for me.
I'm still sorting through how I feel about the TC now. But this horse feels more lucky than good.

I was SOOOO EXCITED for pharaoh. I can’t explain it but I just don’t feel the same for justify. Have wanted him to lose (but known he wouldn’t) every start. If he wins, he wins. It just doesn’t feel like a big deal to me this year.

That met mile field, though

Can’t wait for that race.

Every year there is a buzz about some super horse that is going to have the shot at the triple crown.
AND if that horse wins the Derby, it gets magnified.

The difference is that AP had a stacked field, he had crazy good speed numbers, and he LOOKED so smooth. The first horse in a while that really did feel like he had a shot.

Justified just seems like another Derby winner. And two sloppy tracks for a front runner seems to cheapen it.

But this one was apparently already resurrecting the dead before he even entered a starting gate

What a joke of a field.

Giving Baffert another pass to triple crown i see. Already gave him 1.

Favorite is a huge quitter. He quit in Derby(was walking), was lucky about conveyor belt, was quitting in preakness on a conveyor belt, and will have to go further.

The Trainers and owners are pussies. This field is a joke.

Unless he walks around the track, he won't hit the board. If he gets pushed to a 48 half by anyone, he will be asking for air halfway around the turn.

You know I’m an emotional gambler

But who presses him? Blinkers off Noble Indy.

Oh, he was getting caught no doubt.

That last furlong Bravazo and Ten-Fold were flying...right past him if the race was 20 yards longer.

To be fair...I don't think the jockey did a good job of letting him see the outside horses...it seems like Justify only thought the inside horse was his competition and he put him away and might have slowed up.

Any opinions on the ownership/Pletcher keeping Audible out of the Belmont?

Yeah, that was the big gripe for years without a TC winner.

Well it's not fair, you should have to run all 3 races.

Why?

Like you said, each race is it's own grand title.

Never had a problem with trainers skipping the Derby and just racing the Preakness or skipping that and just racing Belmont. Each trainer does what he thinks has the best shot of success.

And winning one of the TC races is worth a lot of money instead of racing your horse in all and tiring them out.

Unless I'm missing something, there is no requirement to run the Derby/Preakness, is there? It's still a field based on earnings, no?
