First episode of Behind the Braves dropped yesterday on Youtube: LINK

I really hope this works out for Grissom at SS. He's such a good dude.

Hilliard is definitely making the team at worst as the 4th OF'er. Luplow I can see being at Gwinnett.

MLB.com: What are you thoughts about Michael Harris II?

Jones: Michael Harris is a superstar. There are no ifs, ands or buts about it. I saw him coming up and immediately thought he was a left-handed Ronald Acuña [Jr.]. He’s just a phenomenal kid. He works hard. He’s the kind of guy you really pull for. The core is here. We’ve got five or six studs in the starting lineup. The key is keeping them healthy all year and providing this pitching staff with as much offense as we can

Albies spoke with Jayson Stark of The Athletic. He said the Braves plan to run wild.

“I think it’s gonna be an awesome year,” he began. “It’s gonna be a lot more running game for sure.”

So does that fit into his team’s plans? Albies smiled.

“Yes,” he said, “because we have a lot of speed runners in our lineup that can easily get 20 to 25 bags a year. Why not?”

So let’s start with Acuña. What is he capable of?

“He can easily get 40 to 50 bags by himself,” Albies said matter of factly.

“I’ll take 30-30,” he said. “But my goal is to go 40-40.”

Then what, we asked, was Harris going to do? For the record, he had 19 homers and 20 steals last year as a rookie, or 24/31 if you include his 43 games in the minor leagues. So is he headed for 30-30?

"40-40,” Albies retorted confidently

Elder with 3 scoreless innings, 3 K, 1 H, 0 BB against what was largely the Astros first-choice lineup.

This is good to see. He’s gonna make the team. Snit said as much the other day. I’m sure AA tried to attach him in some potential trades this off-season, but no buyers. And if we were gonna straight up release him, we would have by now. The fact is he just makes too much money to simply eat. At worst, he’s a RH PH option off the bench that’s a threat to run into a late inning 3-run homer to tie it up. We’ve seen what he can do when he’s at his best like in 2020.

I hated him last year—and probably will this year—because he still pulls off of everything and runs out of bat on fastballs away or anything off speed. And refuses to adjust. Pisses me off to no end. But he can punish mistakes and still makes really hard contact when he connects. If we could just get something in between ‘22 and ‘20, he’s a decent piece to have, overpaid as he may be. But we’re paying it anyway, so may as well give him a chance.

I was just watching MLBN’s 2023 Braves preview. They start talking about Sean Murphy at 22:09. I’ll link it.

MLBN’s Braves Preview

They talk a lot about his defense, especially his arm and how big that will be this year with the new rule changes (bigger bases and pickoff limits). Shows a bunch of highlights of him not only throwing runners out at 2nd, but throwing behind them and picking them off of 1st. Say just the threat of that will keep runners close. They asked Buck Showalter to talk about the NL East, and he mentioned the Murphy trade as something that’s going to affect the entire division.

I know a lot of y’all hated the trade because you think we either game up too much or because it didn’t address our 2 biggest needs of SS and LF, but I’ve maintained that 1) we couldn’t pick the year he was going to be available—the A’s were trading him this off-season—and 2) he’s a good bit better than people think. Not just his defense, but I think he’s gonna really hit in the Braves’ lineup. He had really good numbers in a AAAA Oakland lineup when he had even the slightest protection. Surround him by the guys he’ll be surrounded by, and I think he puts up significantly better numbers than Contreras did last year or will in Milwaukee.

One other thing caught my ear. They were talking about Riley being one of the 2 best 3B in MLB and one of the best overall hitters in the game the last few years, and a guy on there—Bo Porter—said he was working in the Braves’ front office in summer of ‘17 and John Hart had him go sit on Sonny Gray in Oakland and watch some of his starts. They almost traded for him. The A’s wanted Riley and Ozzie. This guy was in the camp that it was too much to give up, but it made it sound like Hart may have had to be talked down (I may be reading too much into it, though). But holy shite did we dodge a bullet if was even close to happening.

Great to see. I think he got roughed up pretty good his last outing against a bad Red Sox lineup. Somebody’s gotta step up and take that 5th starter’s job. I want somebody to win it, not have it be given to them by default. (Dodd has looked nice so far, but I think he probably needs a full year of starts in Gwinnett before he’s ready to join the rotation.)

Have we talked about how the shift might affect Kyle Wright. I’ve been listening to “Locked on Braves” with Jake Mast—whatever. He’s mentioned it a few times this off-season, but re-addressed earlier this week when some site projected Wright to have a 3.80+ ERA this year (projected both Fried and Strider to be over 3 as well fwiw).

Now this site didn’t explain the regression, but Jake has been saying it’s something he’s a little concerned about. I think Wright was in the bottom 30% of exit velos last year and top 20 or 30 in BABiP. So basically he was giving up a lot of hard contact, but they were mainly ground balls right at guys. Will more of those slip through this season without the shift? Hopefully whatever negative effects it may have on our ground ball pitchers is off-set by our dead pull lefties like Olson, Eddie, and Ozzie sneaking even more through themselves. But it’s something to keep and eye on and may make high K/9 guys like Strider and Max even more valuable.

Sometimes the best trades are the ones you don't make.

Think how much different the team would look if both of them ended up in Oakland.

Ian Anderson looked pretty good on Sunday. Good life on the fastball, and throwing it for strikes. The slider looks -- usable. At the minimum, it gives him a pitch he can work east-to-west to break up some of his usual north-south pattern.

During the game last night, Ben dropped the news that Darren O'Day is going to be part of the broadcast team this year.

Hopefully replacing Nick Green or Brian Jordan in the pre and post game shows. They are terrible.

Hopefully BJ. I can tolerate Nick. Brian is just plain awful. DOD was supposedly the comedian in the bullpen so should be good a good watch.

I can't, I find him worse than Jordan in a lot of aspects. Jordan at least is comfortable and animated on TV when he says stupid shite, Green just comes off as nervous and robotic when he says stupid shite.

Fried allowed just two infield hits today, both were to Grissom at SS.

His range just isn't there. At least one of those infield hits should've been an out.
