From someone who doesn't know much about these schools other than how they have performed recently.
How would you rank these schools in order of potential, and which ones you see doing the best in the future
La Tech
Tulane
ULM

Potential:
1. - La. Tech (Coach Dooley + won a '08/'09 bowl game + '09 recruiting class)
2. - Tulane (Exciting post-Katrina resurgence + impressive 2-2 start in '08 + '09 recruiting class)
3. - ULM
4. - ULL
"doing the best in the future":
1. - Tulane (Coach Toledo unlikely to leave + improved recruiting)

Tech went 8-5 last season with a bowl win, what has Tulane done recently?
Congrats to La. Tech's 8-5 record, bowl win and current '09 recruiting class.
BUT...until Tulane fails to dominate La. Tech, ULM or ULL - Tulane will remain the #2 team in the state.
The Facts:
- In the last 10 seasons, Tulane and La. Tech share a less than impressive winning percentage (42% and 46%, respectively).
- In the last 10 seasons, Tulane has had an undefeated season and 2 winning bowl appearances ('98 v. BYU; '02 v. Hawaii).
- In the last 10 seasons, La. Tech's best season was an 8-3 effort in '99. La. Tech has split their 2 bowl appearances ('01 v. Clemson; '08 v. N. Illinois).
- All-time, Tulane has a bowl record of: 4-6.
- All-time, La. Tech has a bowl record of: 2-2-1.
- All-time, Tulane is 8-0 v. La. Tech*...the most recent win, a 63-30 blow-out in 1998.
- Of course, we won't even get into academics...
* Tulane is 2-0 v. ULM and 20-4 v. ULL (ULL's last win was in 1995, Tulane has won the last 4 games)

Some national press on Tulane's '09 recruiting class...
ESPN: Rivals BYU, Utah boast solid classes (Bill Conley, 1/28/09)
- "...it's no surprise that non-BCS schools and their conferences are gaining more national respect than ever before in the world of college football recruiting."
- "The 2009 class of recruits going to non-BCS institutions is impressive in terms of quality."
Conley reviewed the following non-BCS schools:
- Boise State (mwc)
- BYU (mwc)
- ECU (cusa)
- Houston (cusa)
- SMU (cusa)
- Southern Miss (cusa)
- TCU (mwc)
- TULANE (cusa)
- Tulsa (cusa)
- Utah (mwc)
"Tulane
Coach Bob Toledo and staff are putting together a strong and impressive class. Although there is plenty of defensive talent in this large class, the top player may be tight end Brock Sanders (Duluth, Ga./Northview). Sanders is a versatile athlete who has played on both sides of the football and should develop into a very solid tight end with physical and mental maturity."

*** neworleans.com: Tulane Recruiting Update (1/29/09) ***
- With two spots left to fill, the Green Wave has three primary targets in their sights.
- Two will visit Tulane this weekend while Green Wave coaches will visit the other.
RB/LB KENNY CAIN
- John Curtis star Kenny Cain is set to take his on-again, off-again, on-again official visit this weekend. After telling sources that he had verbally committed to TCU last weekend, Cain said he was simply misunderstood. J.T. Curtis, his high school coach, tells NewOrleans.Com that while TCU pushed him to commit, interviewers did the same through provocative questions. Cain is still seriously considering Tulane.
- The two-way Patriot standout will be hosted by former John Curtis players Alex Lauricella, a defensive whom he is close to, as well as starting guard Andrew Nierman. The connections run deep for Cain at Tulane with former Curtis star Oscar Ponce de Leon also on the Tulane roster and with lineman Mike Henry already committing.
- While Tulane will give Cain the option of playing running back or linebacker, they are leaning toward trying him at linebacker should he choose the Green Wave. Cain wants to try linebacker as well. TCU is recruiting him as a linebacker. Despite the misunderstanding and de-commitment, TCU is still very interested in Cain. It will all come down to how well his visit goes this weekend.
WR DEVIN FIGARO
- Also visiting Tulane this weekend will be wide receiver Devin Figaro of Hargrave Military Academy. The former Lafayette High star has narrowed his choices to Tulane and UAB. What Tulane likes about Figaro is his size (6'3) and the fact that he has good hands.
LB KENDRICK JAMES
- Meanwhile, Tulane will take one final shot at luring linebacker Kendrick James away from Louisiana Tech. The 6'1, 225 pound linebacker is a verbal to the Bulldogs but has wavered back and forth in recent weeks. Sources tell Neworleans.com Sports that Tulane coaches will visit O. Perry Walker High School tomorrow in an attempt to convince James to stay at home. James played defensive end for the Chargers but projects as a linebacker at Tulane. He has good speed and striking ability.
- Tulane clearly needs linebackers. Their top preference would be to get both Cain and James and plug them in with Cody Ledford to form an outstanding trio of linebacker recruits in this class.
ETC.
- While they have a desperate need at wide receiver based on the 2008 season, Tulane has four wideouts in their 2009 class already. West Monroe's speedy D.J. Banks will be tried as a receiver. Karr's Jordan Sullen is in the fold. Ryan Grant of Beaumont will have a chance to compete. William Van Hooser of Montgomery was an early commitment. Should they fail to lure either of the two linebackers, Figaro would become exhibit A.
- Any combination of two of these three would put a solid finish on a nice recruiting effort for Toledo and his staff for 2009.

As am I, although from what I've read Figaro seems interested.
I'd prefer Cain and James (a steal from La. Tech's nice recruiting class would be nice).
We'll see... Toledo & staff have kept it competitive despite a 2-10 season (v. La. Tech's 8-5 + bowl win season).

And even the most hard core Tulane football insiders and fans would NOT blame him.
TCU is a steady and superior football program in a rising conference.
But, as always, an NFL career is a long-shot...
...and a degree from Tulane never hurts.
Either way, best of luck to the young Mr. Cain.

It'd be a nice pull for Tulane if they could convince him to stay home. But yea tough to turn that down

The latest article on Tulane's recruitment of John Curtis RB/LB Kenny Cain:
Times-Picayune: Curtis running back Kenny Cain makes visit to Tulane football this weekend (1/31/09)
- “Tulane is a great school, not only in terms of their football program, but also in regards to their academics. It’s one of the top schools you can attend,” said Cain, who is fully qualified academically with plans to pursue degree in business. “A Tulane diploma to me is a million dollar ticket. You’re set for life.”
- The Curtis All-Stater will now choose between Tulane, TCU and Northern Illinois, the schools to which he has made official visits. All three will allow him to play running back if he wishes, although Tulane and TCU project him as a strong safety and linebacker respectively.
- There is no leader, Cain said, despite a report earlier this week from a TCU-affiliated recruiting website that characterized him as a Horned Frog commit and quoted him as gushing about the Frogs following an official visit to Fort Worth last weekend. [for Prominentwon's benefit]
- “Tulane has done a good job with Kenny. They’ve done a good job of developing a relationship. He has a genuine interest in the school. He’s got some (Curtis) buddies on the team. There are some positives in the direction the team is going.”
- In addition to Cain, Tulane was scheduled to play host to wide receiver Devin Figaro of Hargrave Military Academy in Chatham, Va., and Karr cornerback Shakiel Smith. Figaro prepped at Lafayette High and Smith committed to Tulane earlier this week.

The Good:
Tulane's 24th Commit!
- WR Devin Figaro (6'3"/180, Hargarve Military Academy, VA) has committed to Tulane!
The Unknown:
- LB/RB Kenny Cain (John Curtis, LA) told Tulane he "has decided to let his emotions calm down, to lay low for a day and to make an educated decision by Tuesday."
- "Cain had a very good visit to Tulane this past weekend. He met with Tulane President Dr. Scott Cowen, Athletic Director Rick Dickson and an official of the School of Business."
The Bad:
- "Kendrick James, a very good linebacker from O. Perry Walker, whom Tulane visited with this past Friday, has decided to stick with his commitment to attend Louisiana Tech. James has verbally committed to the Bulldogs and assistant coach Terry Joseph back on October 7."
The Alternative?:

More News on Tulane's 2009 Recruiting Class:
Times-Picayune: Tulane reels in football recruits with some TLC and persistence (2/2/09)
- "Count [Jordan] Sullen as just one success story among what is considered Tulane's best recruiting class in several years."
- "The Green Wave has commitments from 24 players, plus two early entries who will count in last year's class. Eight players are ranked as three-star recruits by Rivals.com. Tulane had no three-star signees last year."
- "What makes it more impressive is the fact that other than promising the opportunity to earn immediate playing time, the Green Wave wasn't exactly dealing from strength. Tulane has had six consecutive losing seasons and went 2-10 last season, losing its last eight games."
- "The school's academic requirements eliminate the possibility of recruiting some who meet the NCAA eligibility standards, including those being signed by other Conference USA schools."
- "Obviously, there's a lot to sell here from the academic standpoint, but you also have to make them see that the program is headed in the right direction, regardless of the number of wins and losses."
- "Banks added that he is still "strong in my commitment" and "ready to sign" with Tulane on Wednesday."
- "Toledo said he has no fallback players if they lose anyone or if the last players they're recruiting sign elsewhere, preferring to save his remaining scholarships for a transfer, an early entry senior or perhaps a walk-on."

Based on the article I've cited above, Toledo will hold on to the last scholarship (in the likely case that Cain selects TCU).
Oh well... a really nice recruiting class despite the 2-10 record. I look forward to seeing these kids take the field next season.

I have heard some rumblings around Curtis that Kenny cain is really torn between the two schools. It could go either way, he is set to make a decision later today. The most impressive thing with this class is the overall speed. The two players from Karr are exceptional athletes , how they are only two star players just shows that no one has scouted them. There is also 4-5 Div. I recruits at Karr for next year.

Yes...
It's well-documented (I cited two recent articles on the Recruiting Board, see this thread's OP) that recruiting report cards and recruit ratings are often biased and uncertain.
We only have 24 commits, not 25, in '09 - Rivals.com also has included our early enrollee, GA's Kevin Burris, in our '09 class (he is an '08 class member), thereby "lowering" our overall ranking.
That said, others have similiar arguments - so let's see how it all turns out!
