I always wondered about that and didn't know. One of my favorite jerseys as a kid was a white Hershal Walker Cowboys jersey, and I liked how they wore them at home. I always liked the KSU unis because they reminded me of the Cowboys but I loved the purple too.
I know that Iowa's Hayden Fry based the Iowa unis off of the Steelers because he loved them and the Steel Curtain D so much.
