Is there any doubt USC will be preseason No. 1 in AP poll?

With the way Sam Darnold played against Penn State, they probably will be. He's legit and they will be riding his dick, rightfully so. Idk how the rest of the team looks.

I don't understand this. What did USC do that FSU did't?

In nearly every computer rating, FSU is ahead of USC by a bit. FSU had the #2 SoS in the nation while USC had like the #17 strongest schedule in the nation..

Even USC bowl performance wasn't any better than FSU. Its kinda crazy to reward a team so much for giving up 49 points.

Firstly, I don't care about end of year rankings, so I'm not trying to prove USC over FSU, just offering an answer.

Short answer, USC finished the season stronger. Long answer:

USC beat then #4 UW at UW late in the season. Who's FSU's best regular season win? Florida?
FSU beat #10 Michigan in a bowl game.
USC beat #5 Big 10 Champ PSU in a bowl game.
USC has a 9 game winning streak, 2nd longest in the country.
USC's non-conf schedule was Bama, Notre Dame, Utah State
FSU's non-conf schedule was Ole Miss, USF, Charleston Southern (FCS school)
USC's worst loss was a blow out loss to Bama, who came within 1 second of winning the national championship.
FSU's worst loss was a blow out loss to Louisville, who lost their last 3 games of the year, 2 of which were mutli-TD losses.

Those are not first-place votes. They are previous rankings

I might accept you answer if USC wasn't #9 and FSU wasn't #10 the week before.

FSU non-conference schedule included Florida as well.
USF finished #19
Florida finished #14

Penn St was ranked #5 and Michigan was ranked #6 before the bowl games. Michigan is being punished more for losing to FSU than Penn St is for losing to USC. WTF

I was just using FSU as a comparison. USC has no business being ranked #3 in the country. If your going to use the Washington\USC head to head as part of your final rankings, then why not use the PennSt\Michigan head to head as well.

Oklahoma finished even stronger than USC.
You do realize USC in the AP's most overrated team of all time. This plays right into that narrative.

Okay so you didn't want an actual answer, you just want to complain that USC is "overrated" and a "media darling". Dude, then just say that.

I just didn't think any of those arguments were good enough.
I personally believe USC should be ranked #5 or 6.

I can't come up with a rational reason to make USC #3 without it being extremely inconsistent with other teams on the list.
