My son was contacted my a rep for NCSA (Next College Student Athlete) about setting up his recruiting profile.

Does anyone have experience using this service?

I didn’t know NCSA had male gymnast recruiting profiles.

I’ve coached a couple of kids well set up profiles. Mostly got hit up by small jucos in the Midwest

OK. He wants to play college ball but we don't know the 1st thing about baseball recruiting.

I would recommend using Locker Linked.. much easier and cheaper to use.. it’s a DIY program so you work at your own pace with reaching out to college coaches directly.

Interesting...I'll take a look at it.

My son is a freshman and this isolation period is sucking.

Well, I used to do about a dozen recruiting seminars a year in the DFW area for a few high schools. One of the messages to parents was that the recruiting services can do nothing more than you cannot do. No inside contact allowed. No insider info that is not available on the web. Most parents in that area are just lazy & can write the check, so those guys manage to stay in business.

I heard the pitch from half a dozen of these guys earlier this century & it is what motivated me to put the presentation together & try to get the word out. Started at my son’s school & it just grew over the years; never solicited the schools, but the word got out & the invitations came. That should say something about how the coaches feel, unless they are earning a “referral” fee. FWIW, I charged $ “0”.

Interesting. He plays for a small school and just don't want him to miss any possible opportunities.

Where I went to school the head coach was way more involved in recruiting.

You cannot depend on the high-school coaches to take the lead in your kid’s recruitment. They will usually support you and certainly respond to a college coach’s call, but don’t expect them to pick up the phone and initiate the conversation.

Another message for the parents from the seminar; be realistic in your kid’s ability. The truth is, if he really has the desire to play college ball, there is a place for him to play and get assistance for his education. It may not be LSU, TU or AL, but there is a place to play. The lower divisions all have scholarships of different levels, except D-3 and even there, tuition allowances happen.

I got lucky with my little QB. Played his freshman year at a Big 10 school, but realizing he would never see the field, transferred to a smaller school and enjoyed a great football career getting his degrees. The key is the kid’s true desire to play.

Yeah. He realizes that playing for a large Div I school will be tough.

He just wants a shot at playing college ball. Honestly, he would be happy with a chance to walk-on somewhere like LA Tech.

He just wants to be able to play ball while he is getting his degree somewhere.

Have him put a list together of schools he’s interested in. When the time is right(probably not his freshman year) start emailing their coaches that your son is a ball player and interested in playing for them. Then send them a schedule of when he’ll be playing.

Every single coach I did this with told me how much they appreciated it. Get some video of your son’s at bats. Baseball obviously doesn’t have the budget of the other big sports. Coaches can’t just fly around and catch every game.

OK. When I was in school our coach contacted the schools we were interested in for us and handle that initial contact...he already had relationships with many of them....of course this was back before internet when you had to make VHS tapes and contact information wasn't available on Google...lol.

So I wasn't sure if us contacting the coaches was the normal practice.

Oh ! One more message, this one for the kids:

You can run a 4.4 40, but if you can’t stay academically eligible, you go nowhere. Coaches will ask for two things, tape & transcripts, not necessarily in that order.

Don't pay anyone to put up a profile for him.

If he's a hitter, put a short video together of him taking BP (4 or 5 swings) and if possible get an off the tee exit velo reading in the clip. No musical cues, no more than about 20 or 30 seconds. Put his grad year, measurables, and GPA on a slide at the beginning of the clip and post it to @flatgroundbats on Twitter, they will retweet it for free and coaches all over the country will see it.

If he's a pitcher, get a velo reading, a spin rate reading if possible, show him pitching from behind home plate and from the side. Same video details as the previous paragraph, but post it to @flatgroundapp.

Flatground was a project started by a HS pitching coach somewhere in Ohio I think. He basically just wanted a way to democratize baseball scouting. It's free, and it's helped a ton of guys in the past couple years get scholarships and sign pro contracts.

No, but most do and put a ridiculous amount of work and hours into it. The HS coach is by far the best resource. He has direct communication with college coaches. A HS football coach at an average program in an average area will still get anywhere from 10-30 different programs stopping into the school in the spring (except for this year unfortunately)

Recruiting sites and travel coaches cannot say the same

OK....hopefully after this batch of rain comes through we can get to the fields and get some video of him.

We won't have access to anything to measure any velocity right now.
