Well, typically 1 WAR goes for about $6-7 million on the open market these days. Trout has been worth over 10 WAR each of the past two seasons.
Now I realize WAR isn't perfect and this isn't exact science, but I think it does a good job of putting us in the ballpark.

I hear people talking about those values but I never really cared for discussing hypothetical values where currency is discussed like monopoly money. So it's based on WAR... enough said.

Scott Feldman got $10 million AAV on the open market this year. Tanaka got over $25, plus a player friendly option. You don't think Trout is five times as valuable as Feldman and twice as valuable as Tanaka? Now those weren't ten year commitments, but considering Trout is only 22, I don't think that would be a huge hang-up.

yeah its not simple multiplication. at some point you dont just get 20M more than any other player. you are taking that baseline way too literal.
It would be a ton of money, but it would not be 500M (assuming we are talking a 10 year contract).

well sure, every team has a different marginal value of a win. an extra win or two is worth more to a borderline playoff team than it is to say the astros
but, trout doesn't have to be valued at $500 million by every team...it'd just take one. trout would make every team in baseball significantly better, so everyone would be bidding.

Sure Trout is worth 5 times more than Feldman... but Feldman isn't worth 10 million a year. That's just what he's getting paid. If we applied that concept to every player in the league, like I said, they'd be playing for monopoly money. Teams profit margins would start evaporating, ticket and concession prices would get hand, and the quality of baseball being played would suffer.

I'd rather my team overpay for a legit superstar in his prime like Trout than on a middle-of-the-road starting pitcher like Feldman. Trout is a uniquely valuable player. We're not bidding on a guy who is very good, we're bidding on the absolute best. Yeah, I'd overpay for that.
Only a few teams can afford to do it, but they would line up to do it. This is getting Mickey Mantle in all of his prime years.

A 6 or 7 year deal will be worth more than $15 million a year.

If he signs that, it would be a bargain in my opinion.
If he signs that it would be torture and outright theivery.

Good article on fangraphs today about why trout would get and be worth $40-50 million a year.
