The lightning hold has ended! Now it's just a matter of drying the track.

Hey why don't we have jet dryers anymore?

Pardon my ignorance, I’m not familiar with Indy. They don’t race on a wet track? I’m guessing they don’t have a wet tire allocation?

No one races ovals in the wet.

Indy runs in the wet on road courses.

Whoops, my mistake, they do have jet dryers.

Edit: No, I was right the first time. The announcer called it a jet dryer but I looked it up and the Air Titan uses compressed air.

The selling point of the Air Titan:
quote:

The Air Titan 2.0 emits 80 percent fewer emissions than traditional track-drying methods.

Edit 2: OK now I'm reading that the Air Titan is used in conjunction with a jet dryer. So they do have a jet dryer.

Good, storytime then maybe I get to see the end.

Anywhere to watch the NASCAR quali from earlier today or not really worth watching?

Josef Newgarden vaults up two places in the standings to P2, just 3 pts behind championship leader Will Power. Interestingly, Power leads the championship with just 1 race win this year so far. Newgarden has won 5 races this year but still trails Power in the championship!

With just 2 races left, 7 drivers are still technically in contention, but realistically it's down to the top 4:

P01 Will Power (Penske / Chevy) 482 pts
P02 Josef Newgarden (Penske / Chevy) 479 pts
P03 Scott Dixon (Ganassi / Honda) 468 pts
P04 Marcus Ericsson (Ganassi / Honda) 465 pts

The usual suspects are in the top 3, with Ericsson in contention for the first time in his IndyCar career I think. Defending champion Alex Palou has 439 pts, he is a bit too far back to repeat his championship.

In the Rookie of the Year competition, after the previous race, Christian Lundgaard had a 41 point lead on David Malukas. After Gateway, Malukas now trails Lundgaard by just 11 points, a 30-point swing! I thought that 41 point gap was going to be too big to overcome, but now, with Malukas consistently improving race by race, I gotta predict that Malukas will win Rookie of the Year when it's all said and done.

Josef doing our state proud, if he had some more luck at the start of the season he would be pulling away by now. But I say this with all sincerity...

ANYONE but Ericsson. ANYONE.

I didn't know Marcus had haters. Seems like a likable enough guy. I'd kind of prefer a first-time champion. But I don't think he has it in him. The guys in front of him are relentless fighters.

Depending on how discussions are going with CGR, will be interesting to see if Palou maybe gets the boot from his seat early since he’s not in contention for the championship now

Portland race at 3:00 PM ET today on NBC!

So with two races remaining, the top 7 are still technically in contention for the championship, but only the top 4, separated by just 17 points, have a realistic chance.

P01 Will Power (Penske / Chevy) 482 pts
P02 Josef Newgarden (Penske / Chevy) 479 pts
P03 Scott Dixon (Ganassi / Honda) 468 pts
P04 Marcus Ericsson (Ganassi / Honda) 465 pts
P05 Alex Palou (Ganassi / Honda) 439 pts
P06 Scott McLaughlin (Penske / Chevy) 428 pts
P07 Pato O'Ward (McLaren / Chevy) 424 pts

So where did they qualify at Portland? Well the Penske drivers dominated with a 1-2-3 qualifying order:

P01 Scott McLaughlin (Penske / Chevy)
P02 Josef Newgarden (Penske / Chevy)
P03 Will Power (Penske / Chevy)

However, Newgarden got a rare 6-place grid penalty for an engine change. So here is where the top 7 are starting:

P01 Scott McLaughlin (Penske / Chevy) - P6 in championship
P02 Will Power (Penske / Chevy) - P1 in championship

P04 Alex Palou (Ganassi / Honda) - P5 in championship
P05 Pato O'Ward (McLaren / Chevy) - P7 in championship

P08 Josef Newgarden (Penske / Chevy) - P2 in championship

P16 Scott Dixon (Ganassi / Honda) - P3 in championship

P18 Marcus Ericsson (Ganassi / Honda) - P4 in championship

It looks like Will Power is in a very strong position to extend his lead and make it a two-man race with Newgarden going into the last race at Laguna Seca.

Scott Dixon’s recovery from a P16 starting position to finish on the podium at Portland was stunning. Dixon and his Ganassi team operate at such a consistently high level. Dixon kept himself in the championship with that perfect performance from him and the team. Meanwhile, Josef Newgarden started and finished in P8, allowing Dixon to pull up even in championship points.

So going into the last race at Laguna Seca, here’s where they stand:

P01 Will Power (Penske / Chevy) 523 pts (1 race win)
P02 Josef Newgarden (Penske / Chevy) -20 pts (5 race wins)
P03 Scott Dixon (Ganassi / Honda) -20 pts (2 race wins)
P04 Marcus Ericsson (Ganassi / Honda) -39 pts (1 race win)
P05 Scott McLaughlin (Penske / Chevy) -41 pts (3 race wins)

After Portland, Palou and O’Ward are eliminated from contention. Ericsson and McLaughlin are technically still in it heading to Laguna Seca, but realistically only Power, Newgarden, and Dixon are fighting for the championship.

Power, with only 1 race win, has shown relentless consistency this year and deserves the championship. Newgarden has a spectacular 5 wins this season, but the fact that he’s not leading the championship with that many wins means he suffered from some bad results that his closest competitors did not.

Having three guys with a very realistic chance to win the championship should make for a spectacular race!
