nd-to-last

Nitpicking, but why ever use "second to last" when penultimate is there for the taking.

I'm not about to use a thesaurus to write in an informal setting.

If you were referencing the third-to-last paragraph, would you say antepenultimate?

You'll never have to use a thesaurus again for that one. Next time you're about to write "second to last" you'll remember this thread and go with "penultimate".

On antepenultimate, I love it. I'm a huge proponent of using words that aren't words but that totally should be words.

EDIT: holy crap, it's an actual word. Mind blown! Leaving the above paragraph in just to demonstrate that I didn't know it was a word, was advocating for its use even when I didn't think it was a word, and then googled it and figured out it was a word....which only further buttresses the argument for using it liberally.

Anyone see talent in Tiafoe? His forehand looks like a total disaster from a technical standpoint, and it doesn't seem to generate much pace. Isn't the best mover, yet I've seen several people pimping him as the next young up and coming American.

Frankly, Sock has the most potential to me of all the young up and comers we've been through since Sampras. He's got a great forehand and serve. His backhand has its moments. He moves pretty well.

Tiafoe in the times I've seen him looks like a pretty big disaster. Harrison looked better earlier.

Tiafoe is hyped primarily because of his athleticism.

Sock is already 24 and, while he has turned into a solid top 20 player, I don't see him getting to the elite level. His backhand is still a liability and he can't hang with the top guys mentally.

As far as the young Americans go, I'd go with Fritz as having the best shot of reaching the top.

Just watched a full match of Tiafoe:

He's hot garbage as an up and coming prospect. His forehand is very quirky. He's not that athletic. At points, it looked like his feet were in concrete. His backhand generates no pop.

His strength is he can run his 1st serve, which is not hit in at a high %, into the mid 130s.

They're pimping him hard. I think it's because of his story. And the Serena/Tiger theory. Only issue is they have a lot of talent. Elite talent. I can separate performance from potential. Tiafoe is not a legit top 20 ranking prospect at his ceiling. Thiem/Zverev/Kyrgios are true up and comers. This guy is not even close to their level. None of the Americans are.

Opelka could be one to keep an eye on due to his serve alone. If he can continue to develop other parts of his game he has potential to be a top tier player.

Eta 17 year old Kayla Day won her first round match today. She's good at tennis.

I just can't accept this answer, because I don't think Fritz has a terribly high ceiling. I think he just matured a lot faster than the others.

I'll put both Opelka and Tiafoe as having more upside than Fritz, who just isn't a great athlete.

I've heard good things about Michael Mmoh but have never seen him play.

I'm a big fan of Kozlov, but I fear he just didn't end up growing enough. Bummer...I like his game.

Noah Rubin is also a little guy, but the focker can move.

You realize he's the second highest ranked player under 20, right?

Only if we're talking handsomeness. Harrison was never ever going to be elite. And if you couldn't see it after five minutes of watching that guy play -- even at 19 -- you either weren't paying attention or you don't have the ability to make those kinds of distinctions.

True, but he has the best weapon of the bunch. His backhand has gotten orders of magnitude better, and he's finally learning how to construct points.

Playing HS tennis in Nebraska rather than playing in futures events and the like was a fairly terrible decision and retarded his development, but he's probably the most purely talened of all of them.

Pure nonsense. Tiafoe isn't athletic? Feet in concrete? I think you were watching somebody else. Which is weird because I think there is only one 19 year old black american player in the top 100.

Tiafoe's concrete feet

I love Thiem, but he's 23. He's close to peaking.

Zverev will win majors, and Kyrgios can win as many majors as he wants. Comparing the Americans to Kyrgios isn't exactly fair. Kyrgios isn't just more talented than all the young Americans; he's more talented than everybody on tour.

Or because he's the second highest ranked teenager In. The. World.

I would be careful using Indian Wells for any sort of comparison, or future outlook for players. The combination of the ball flight and the bounce are too unique, and make it tough for anyone to adjust.

Yesterday, for example, in matches that didn't feature 2 qualifiers, the qualifiers went 4-1 in ATP, and 4-2 in WTA. The day before, McHale lost to a qualifier 6-1, 6-0, and she made the semis in Acapulco last week. Even Murray has struggled there, and his game should play well virtually anywhere.

For today's matches, I'll be playing underdog qualifier Giraldo for this reason. And I try to avoid WTA betting, but Kontaveit fits this scenario too.

Ryan Harrison had to gather rackets from various locations around the court and put them in neat little pile after his first round loss last night.

Ahh, memories. Ryan once let a racket enter the lake at the Lake Charles Racket Club after a dominating loss to Lsupride87

That's funny. That had to be a brutal loss for him last night. They didn't even take the court until almost 10 o clock. When I fell asleep he was down 5-1 in the first set and had already called the trainer over and requested something to help his " energy level"

My schedule for Stadium 2 tomorrow is Thiem, Isner, Berdych, Halep, and then a nightcap of the Bryans vs. Kyrgios/Zimonjic. Not shabby at all. I want to see Sock/Isner vs. #1 seed Mahut/Herbert on court 6, though it's lined up at about the same time as the Bryans.
