The ink would've been all smeared from the spittle.

This was very common practice from Michigan in the early era of college football. They would hold clinics for high schools, colleges, and trade schools throughout the Midwest and Canada teaching them the game. After it was over they would play a scrimmage against the school they just tought how to play the sport and beat them like 100-0 and count it towards their all time wins record. Hence them having the all time wins record in college football.
TLDR: They would teach Ann Arbor High School (actually happened) or Michigan College for the deaf (also actually happened) the new sport of Football and then play them right after and count it towards their all time wins record.

1n 1887 Notre Dame played Michigan 3 times and lost every game...that was their entire schedule.
The next year Notre Dame played just one game...against a high school prep team and won their first game ever 20-0.
In 1888, Notre Dame was 1-0 for the season after beating the Prep school.
USC was 2-0 after beating the same Prep Academy twice.
Nobody played real teams except the Ivies.
It was all Ivy back then basically.
Yale was 13-0
Harvard was 12-1
Princeton was 11-1
Etc.

It's pretty funny seeing some of the "teams" that were played back in that era. For example, several of UW's opponents back then were battleships and the like.

Best part of this is even literally two centuries ago, motherfrickers had those papers with the preset year on them where you have to fill in the last digit

yeah there were a lot of YMCA type matchups, Coast Guard, etc.
In 1905 Notre Dame played:
North Division High School
American Medical
Michigan Agricultural
Bennett Medical
They lost to Purdue, Wisky, Indiana and Wabash but they beat American Medical 142-0. I guess it was some Dental school.
