Joe Montana's entire rep is basically that he made an incredibly leadership-based, intellectually challenging position look easy when he performed on Sundays and how efficient he could be with that WC Offense against the physicality and overwhelming violence of the defenses that represented that era was something I don't think many people had seen in a while since Unitas...or you know Bert Jones
Holy moly, this guy gets it.

There are seasons...and then there's Joe Montana's 1989 season.
It wasn't that he just dominated the regular season...he dominated the playoffs the likes of which we've never seen since.
I mean it was the perfect post-season.
NFC Champ game:
There had never been anything like it at this level of competition and against this caliber of opponent—the No. 1-rated defensive team in football.
The 49ers had six possessions in the first half, not counting a one-play kneel by Montana at the end, and they scored four touchdowns. The other two times, they drove to the nine and fumbled, and to the 14 and missed a field goal.
The halftime statistics looked like final stats. The offense gained 10 yards a play and piled up 320 yards. The Vikings had held 13 regular-season opponents to less than that for an entire game. "Awesome, just awesome," said Minnesota defensive coordinator Floyd Peters. "We were in shock."
And then of course, the Niners beat the Broncos 55-10 in the Super Bowl.
Some statatician wrote an article back in the 90's and he basically said, Montana was perfect in that post-season...like the dream QB who could do no wrong, no errant pass, no INTs, no misreads...we'll never see anything like it again.

10 minutes left in a tie game, both teams have an equal level of supporting and coaching talent, one is QBed by Joe Montana and the other by Peyton Manning. There’s a gun you your head, you must pick the winner and if you pick the losing team you die.
Who are you picking?
Who are you picking?

Nobody in that situation wouldn’t pick Montana, you can replace Peyton with anyone and most people’s answer would still be Joe. Brady is the only one you’d even really have to think about.
that’s why he’s tGOAT.

Joe, every time. Joe wins the biggest games.

I wouldn’t even think Brady with those two options
The only other guy who I’d think about in that situation is Staubach. Staubach was Montana of the 70’s. You give Staubach these rules offenses and rules. He’d be scary great.

Its a coin flip, I can't just immediately dismiss Peyton dude's a throwback with calling all his own plays and running everything he is as dangerous with the game on the line as anyone who's ever played I mean hell he's the all-time career leader for comebacks and game-winning drives for crying out loud I would have as much confidence in Peyton under these circumstances as I would Joe, a reflection of their great mastery of the game and work ethic

Manning didn’t call his own plays dude. He even admits he doesn’t. Bradshaw and Elway did. It is one of the biggest myths he called his own plays.

You know how we have handicaps in horse racing and sports betting.
Citation got weighed down when he ran after the Triple Crown so people would actually put money on other horses.
As such...you can take QB ratings from 1998 onward and subtract about 25 percentage points...so if Tom Brady has a 105, he really has an 80 (to be fair to other eras in adjusting for football rules inflation.)
Conversely the 1970's is called the Dead Ball Era in football.
Staubach had a 104 passer rating in 1971...that would be like 140 today considering the league average was like 65 back then.
Nobody has obliterated his peers in ability for one year like Staubach did that year.
Sure Manning or Brady will have great years...but they aren't 40 points better than everybody else. There's a ton of journeymen right behind them.

All this manning, brady, montana talk....and this is just overlooked
I dont care what anyone says... this is THE BEST. The dude has constantly played with dog turds at rb, no defense, and slightly above avg at best wrs. He is the most talented qb i have ecer seen play and constantly overlooked.. oh well

The really great thing about the way the QB position has changed over the years has been the changes that the best QB's at the time brought to the game.
Tarkenton was one of the first big time scrambling QBs that set forth the future for other scrambling QBs. He was a human highlight reel at the position.
Bradshaw brought a tough raw feel most QB's other than Jim Plunkett had at the time. Staubach was the most efficient QB at a time bringing a new outlook to the position in trying to be efficient and effective.
Montana brought a calmness and precision of lofting a ball softly into places that no defender could touch it, Joe had the touch, calmness and drive. A new precedent was set.
Marino brough the gunslinger style of QB into play first, and with great precision.
Elway was a combination of Tarkenton & Marino.
It's been fun to watch the top talent take the gameplay to new tactical heights.
I enjoy watching Tom Brady, Drew Brees and the rest react under pressure. The high pressure games are the ones that define the future. Warren Moon would have been as great or greater than the current best in the NFL. Moon is an underrated top purist QB in history IMO.
