quote:It's not about the money. Mack has 3 years left at Texas max. He's just too damn tired for the position of HC anymore. It is taking everything out of him. His ten years at Texas seem like they could just as easily have been 20 years.
Mack would have to take a major salary reduction to be athletic director.
2009 will probably be his last season, as it will also be maybe his second best team ever behind the 2005 Squad. It will be his shot to make one last run at the National Championship.
Afterwards, he'll move on up to the AD Position and name the successor himself. Muschamp would only have to wait two seasons before taking over under this scenario.
It's not a lock by any means and a lot can happen during that time but some very high-up sources extremely close to the situation have pretty much confirmed all of the above as the plan as of today.

You think if he's that tired he'd be up for running the entire athletic department? I think that's a demanding job.

quote:He still wants to be apart of the Texas Program. Him and his wife have grown to love Austin & UT more than they probably ever could have imagined. And Mack, being the smooth-talkin' politician that he is, pretty much would just walk into the position without the Regents so much a blinking.

Oh and the demand on him in the AD position would be nothing compared the day-in/day-out scrutiny that he has faced from the fans and media since the day he arrived in Austin.

Damn, I wonder how he would have done in the SEC if coaching in the Big 12 is grueling for him.
Tuberville will be entering his 10th season at AU this year and Fulmer will be entering his 16th or so season at UT-K this fall and he just signed a seven year extension.

Yeah probably wouldn't have lasted too long at Alabama, LSU, etc. He's just not built that way. He'll be more than happy to take a backseat, let some other Coach handle all the crap, and spend the rest of his days just enjoying life.

I can't blame him. I don't doubt that coaching at Texas is a demanding job. I wouldn't be surprised at all if he's gotten tired of football. I know I would.
