I have had a couple of str's. Nothing in New Orleans. I like airbnb. Have had fewer renter problems than with my long term rentals. You need a reliable cleaning person. Profit has been good.

I recently ran across another option, medium term rentals of a month or more. Caters to travel nurses, people who are relocating, etc. furnishedfinder.com is a site for such rentals. Seems like a lot less hassle for the landlord because of less turnover/cleaning.
I am interested in being a renter of that sort after we retire, to both take an extended vacation in an area and to check out potential neighborhoods to buy in.
I spot checked a few locations and found the rates to be pretty reasonable.
