While I'm not entirely in favor of government passing laws to try and get back to something close to that, the wealth disparity in this country is pretty appalling.
As pointed out you can easily do all of this. The avg new house being built is around $400,000. Completely unnecessary. The avg new car is unnecessary. The avg new smart phone is unnecessary.
We have a ton of options to spend our money today that are not necessary to survive like the things that they had in the 40s and 50s.
If you want to buy 1 car and a small house and a cheap smart phone amongst many other limited options, all of this is extremely doable on the avg household income in the USA.
People just choose not to.

The same reason there are people who key Ferraris when they’re parked on the street.
There are certainly wealthy people who I dislike (wouldn’t say “hate” because that would say something disturbing about me and my state of mind), but I don’t dislike (or like) them just because of their wealth.
IMO, people who live their lives with jealousy and envy in their hearts have a problem that can’t be solved by laws or anything else. And by the same token, people who worship money and possessions are damned as well.

You didn't even mention vacations. Back in the day a normal vacation for middle class in the southeast was going to a the beaches in Al or Fl for 3-5 days once a year. Now middle class think they can go to Disney every year and 30A and Europe every couple years. Not to mention they think they should have a camp or RV.
You also didn't even mention the type of car. The % of cars nowadays that are "luxury" vehicles is crazy. The same with big SUVs. I know gas is "cheap" nowadays but you could still save money with more efficient vehicles.
I remember growing up there was a kid I played ball with whose mom got a Lexus (regular ES). I thought they were rich.
I 100% agree with your premise. The reason it is such an issue is due to lifestyle creep for the middle class as a whole which is most likely tied to the rise in social media.

A little off topic, but when I heard (maybe a year or so ago) that there were people who actually made a living being “social media influencers”, my mind was completely blown!!!
I think I first became aware of this term when Lori Loughlin’s little brain-dead daughter cheated her way into USC and mommy and daddy got caught - then babycake’s make believe profession suddenly dried up. I made a post about this sad and pitiful phenomenon on another board and posted a video of David Bowie’s “This Is Not America” with it.

Exactly. Furthermore, the 1%ers will ALWAYS employee a huge amount of low wage employers by the nature of owning large companies with a lot of employees. Amazon has about 800,000 employees? Let's say Bezos is worth $200 billion, he could give each employee $25,000. I mean that's not changing their lives.

Visionary creators aren't driven by wealth accumulation, but by the need to make something better. I've been in drug discovery for my entire career and have worked with some truly brilliant individuals who have created billion dollar therapeutics. Every single one was doing it because of a human drive to see what is next, and wealth was merely an afterthought bonus to that.
Sticking with medical advances as that is often used as an example of why America is tops on innovation, and it is true America is a world driver for advancement in the medical field. However, America also spends more tax money on development than any other country.
So to say that America is tops because we aren't socialist when that is the system which significantly funds, at least, this particular innovation.
