Well, the simplest things you could do are:

1) Make sure you are important to your employer
2) Make sure you work for an employer who has their shite together
3) Don't over-leverage yourself and spend like an idiot, thereby putting you in a bind if anything happens to your day job.

The above doesn't apply to some economic catastrophe in the future, but all times.
