Got $547 back from fed, then was crushed by the state as I never pay estimated taxes to them.

I did the same. Ended up with $13K back combined from federal and state. I'm not happy about it but being self-employed makes it difficult to get things close for me. I'm going to make at least a certain amount every year but it can go up a LOT at times and I tend to be over conservative on my witholdings when that happens.
I guess the nice thing is that I get that free loan to the government back to do some projects around the house with my "found" money.
