I guess my point was the gap between 1% online high yield savings accounts and ibonds yielding 2% isn't very big. The gap between 0.2% HYSA and 9% ibonds is quite significant. Inflation in the last 15 years has been very low while there was a extended period of time that HYSA yielded savings were "decent". When ibonds are yielding 2% it also brings into play other options that can't compete at the 9% range.

You also give up some potential liquidity at least in the short term at the beginning and anytime you are replenishing the fun after using (if you need to use it).

How do these compare to something like FIPDX (Inflation-Protected Bond Index Fund)?

That fund and others similar invest in TIPS (Treasury Inflation Protected Security). TIPS are similar to I bonds in that they are keep up with inflation but there are some differences.

Also keep in mind that is a bond fund and like any bond fund if the yield of the fund goes up, the prices goes down. Though what most people don't realize is that higher rates are good if you are keeping the bond long term.

For a second, thought you were talking about your trucks at the airport.

Can you share your experience for a fellow noob?

Had never heard of them until recently. There's a thread on the first page here all about it. The guy posted a good link to a blog all about it
