I'm a first time poster for the mb. I have an interview for a job that requires advanced excel skills. Does anybody here know what the best way to learn macros and basic vba skills for financial modeling that are free? I've found a few courses online that cost money but I'm looking for a free website that somebody can recommend. Thanks in advance.

Are you sure you need to know vba? I know a ton of jobs that say advanced skills but they are actually looking for someone that can do pivot tables.

to me advanced excel is not VBA it would be things like

indexmatch and lookups
sumif
dynamic charting/graphing
conditional formatting
nested IF statements
pivot tables
outside data connections

any company who wants VBA skills for their financial modelers is just being too cheap to invest in good BI software imo

100% agree.
I used quite a bit of VBA in my last job. It was helpful to build spreadsheets from a mess of data.

Once that data is in a useful form, it only complicates things beyond most user's ability to work with it.

If you're in financial modeling you'll likely just need to summarize and illustrate aspects of existing data, using pivot tables.

If you're looking to do database management, you're better off learning something like Access or SQL.

This

If VBA was needed it would likely be noted.

I appreciate all of the feedback thanks The HR rep asked if I knew macros but didn't mention VBA. I guess I will just review all of the advanced functions and not bother learning with it.

Is it worth it to learn how to write macros or is that something that most employers will provide for you as well?

I don't think it is that difficult and if she mentioned macros that typically means VBA (VBA is the language used to write macros in excel) I used VBA for dummies and power programming in excel to learn how to write macros.

Much more important to know the capabilities listed in this thread than VBA.
