Stock I have had for 10 months, but took a beating today off some good Q3 numbers.
Claude breakdown
TTMI down ~27% on a beat-and-raise quarter. What they do, what happened, and the upside math
What TTM actually does
TTM Technologies is one of the world's largest makers of printed circuit boards (PCBs). These are the multi-layer boards that every piece of electronics is built on. They also make RF/microwave components and assemblies and full mission systems for aerospace and defense. Their factories are in North America and Asia, and their customers are in data center/networking, aerospace and defense, medical/industrial, and automotive.
The AI angle: AI servers and networking gear need very complex, high-layer-count boards, and TTM builds them. Their Data Center & Networking segment grew 115% year over year this quarter. They also have a $2.0B aerospace and defense backlog, which is steadier business that isn't tied to AI.
The Q3 numbers (this was not a bad quarter)
-Revenue $1.20B, up 60% YoY, above their own guidance of $1.10–1.14B
-Adjusted EPS $1.46, above the top of guidance ($1.21–1.27) and ~16% above consensus
-Adjusted EBITDA margin above 20% for the first time
-Book-to-bill of 2.13, meaning orders came in at more than twice the rate of shipments
-Q4 guide: $1.42–1.44B revenue, $1.77–1.83 EPS
-Preliminary 2027 revenue outlook reportedly $6.5–6.75B, versus 2026 consensus around $4.4B
So why the crash?
Honestly, nobody has a confirmed answer yet. My best read:
-The Q4 guide was in line, not a blowout. Coming off a string of big beats, "in line" disappointed people.
-The stock had run hard. It was up ~48% YTD and around $102 going in. A lot of good news was already in the price.
-They're buying a lot of companies. Swiss Technology Group and Epiq Solutions are done. A $650M all-cash deal for Ophir Optics is pending, plus deals for ILFA and Merlin Circuit. That raises questions about how much of the 2027 growth is organic and how much is bought, and about debt and integration risk.
-Spending to add capacity. Free cash flow margin was only ~6% even with strong operating cash flow. The market sometimes punishes heavy capex.
Valuation after the drop (~$74)
2026 EPS consensus ~$4.82 ? ~15x
2027 EPS consensus ~$7.86 ? ~9.4x forward
Analysts expect ~63% EPS growth in 2027
Under 10x forward earnings for a company growing EPS 60%+ is cheap, if the 2027 numbers hold.
