My wife has about $5k on a student loan with University Accounting Service, LLC (UAS) that we want to payoff with a single payment. She had taken the loan out in college, thought it was deferred but come to find out it wasn't, forgot about it, and it was sent to collections (she wasn't the best with tracking money in her younger years). Fast forward about 10 years and we get something in the mail saying it had been sold to UAS and they are collecting.

This company is horrible. Customer Service is outsourced and they just repeat what you ask them when speaking to them.

We can pay online but my questions is, is there anything I can do to ensure the loan will be fully paid off once I send in payment? When we called they said just send in over the internet or by phone.

My concern is that I send $5k to them and it doesn't get resolved on her credit. We already sent $4k about a year ago in order to get it back in good standing. I just want to make sure we get this issue resolved and off her credit.

What once was a $3k loan has turned into a $9k nightmare. I just want to pay it off and move on.

Does the online site not state it’s current balance and show all payments? If it does I don’t see an issue here

Do they not provide a pay-off amount?

They do show payoffs and every month what we have paid. They also show a starting balance and current balance which I assume would be the payoff balance.

The loan is under younomics but what we are paying to is UAS. I’m assuming they took over the loan and now we pay them in order to clear her name.

BEFORE paying the debt have the collection agency provide you in writing that the amount you have agreed to pay them will satisfy all obligations to them.

Pay the debt via certified/cashiers check. Send the check signature required/certified mail with a signed copy of the release of obligation letter above.

That's what I would like to do, however their customer service just keeps saying to pay online what is owed. I can't get anything in writing from them.

Will they not give you an address to send to? Of course the customer service rep is going to try to pressure you to pay it off immediately online. Go with Golfer's advice and send the certified mail with return receipt.

They do. Currently it is in autodraft since my wife created it back when we found out about the loan. Right now they just send a statement every month for the recurring Echeck payment. I guess I would need to stop those recurring payments, delete the bank account, then send the certified check and mail to their address listed on the statement and follow up.

Maybe I am being overly concerned, I just have very little faith in a company that is getting hammered online about customer service and can barely speak English when you call them.

No, you are absolutely right to distrust companies like this. That’s why you need to make sure you do everything correctly to prevent getting screwed. Keep copies of all correspondence you send and receive. You can find form letters to send with a quick google search

I wouldn’t pay them another cent until they would honor this arrangement.

They don’t want it in writing because they’ll take your payoff and still sell your debt in a package to another collection agency.
