re: starting an e-store website

Some guys I know sell test tubes (to both medical industry and bars for test tube shots). Find you niche, but spend some time marketing locally for sales, in addition to internet sales.

I would be wary of paying money for any sort of backlink service, especially one that wants your password to anything. The search engines, Google especially, are pretty good at weeding out spammy backlinks, so I don't see how it can help. Incoming links do matter, but it's definitely quality over quantity, plus content is always going to be king. There is no quick and easy way to get ranked high, otherwise everyone would do it and it would be neither quick nor easy anymore.

I may have misunderstood you, though, so if you're really talking about search engine submission programs, I would tend not to trust them either. It can't take much time to manually submit your site to Google, Yahoo, and Bing... then you know it's done right and you've got 99% of the market covered.
