DOW coming to a location near you and it will mean jobs. I did not see a lot of publicity about this.

The facilities are currently in the front end engineering and design (FEED) phase and are expected to be completed in 2014.

Jindal is making an announcement today at 2:00 for a plant in Geismar, LA. Not a DOW company...

I heard the same. I'd be taking a pay cut to start out, but I eventually want to get a rotational shift. My 5 year old daughter lives in Tennessee, so I don't get to see her as much as I want. This would allow me to get to see her more often and get experience. I could then move and work at the plants in Clarksville, TN. or closer to her.

My son is a chem engineer. He says that operators do very well.

Retired as a chem eng from a plant on the river. I know operators who made > $160k / yr by working alot of overtime (I mean alot). Benefits can be pretty good.

Pretty laid back job MOST of the time. Great pay and benefits (if with the right company). Shift work isn't for everyone but most operators seem to love it. I'm pretty sure Exxon Baton Rouge is hiring right now.

the down side- these places are open 24/7/365. working holidays sucks for me(i have three fairly young kids). the family is always trying to plan shite but they have to try and plan it around me

I'm self employed for the last 13 years but am trying to get into a couple plants now, mainly for the benefits. Afraid to miss out on things with my 16mo little boy and whatever we have next, but we are getting eaten alive paying for insurance and a topped out plant job would still be a hefty raise.

my kids are 15, 10 and 1. yes i miss some of the things they do ie- my oldest runs track, jr plays baseball, the 1 year old just shits on herslef. i kid

My dad retired as a Ph.D. chemist, said the operators putting in OT made more money than he did.

Father in law works at syngenta so we are used to the schedule sorta. They're very involved with my kid so we work around it a lot. I'm still convincing myself its a worthwhile tradeoff. Lots of benefits and security.

my benefits are good. i think i pay about 300/month for a family 5 on medical, dental, vision and some kind of pharmacy benefit. i dont have a pension, and my 401k is about par for the course with the rest of the plants around here

That sucks a lot, but I don't think I could complain one bit if I had a rotational shift. I would at least get to see my daughter more often. As it is, I only get to see her every other Christmas anyways.
