Nothing makes gold or any other physical metal useful as monetary value.
If shite hits the fan and you need to cross a border or bribe someone to get your family to safety, you going to bet on physical gold/silver or crypto

If we’re playing this fantasy where civilization collapses (will there be zombies?), you don’t want precious metals or crypto. You want useful things like food, ammo, medicine.
Anyways, the use case for precious metals (what if the world collapses) shows how silly an investment it is. If you want a hedge against inflation, buy a commodities ETF or something

OK you can think of zombies but I was thinking more of political unrest or something along those lines (state secession, etc.) Like 70 years ago in Germany when nazis were rounding up Jews and other political enemies, the ones with gold were able to bride their way out of the country to safety.
Is any of that likely here? Probably not. But I would rather have physical gold/silver vs crypto in that scenario.

You can buy directly from the private mints (Scottsdale or Golden Gate for instance) and save a bit over APMEX. Takes forever for them to fulfill an order though.
I have Scottsdale’s 10 Oz stacker bars, they’re awesome but they took 8 weeks to get to me

Silver and gold are commercial commodities, it’s not just a store of value and for doomsday preppers. Commercial applications for PMs

And you can sell ammo easily.
