Stellar is a better XRP IMO , so yes . Load up and forget it . They will be implementing lightning in the future . Have a few different ICO's building on the stellar blockchain . Heres an example , LINK . Partnership with IBM . Its def a coin I like

I think I'm starting to understand this stuff more and more, but I have trouble explaining it to people. In the most general sense, Is it fair to say that these alts (the one I've looked into VEN, ICX, XLM, LINK, NEBL) are not currency at all, they're tokens or ways to access each particular blockchain platform/application?

You missed it , it got as close to $20 I believe. $16 - to close to $20 in like a hour. Then everything tanked .
