3.6% unemployment

I want to reiterate that Jpow has admitted time and time again that we can not hit 2% inflation without the unemployment rate hitting 7%-10% if we are measuring by historical standards and that is his #1 goal.

I will never understand why bulls are bulls at this time.

Where do all the early retirements and re-shuffling of jobs that occurred during COVID play into all of this? More and more people are doing gig work with apps like DoorDash, Uber, etc. The welfare state always has an impact on jobs numbers.

He may be right, but what if the market just needs the people? Does inflation eventually give without the job loss? Tech is getting hit but it was already a huge bubble with a ton of bloat anyway.

Theoretically, it could. But that would mean increasing taxes (LOL won't happen) or the government dial back their spending (LOL as well).

Since the government won't do it's part to curb inflation, Jpow is only left with the hammer of interest rate increases.

I'm pretty sure you just made this up, Elizabeth Warren.

So can you link just one of these times? Since it's happened repeatedly in your mind?

Sounds like you are just putting words in his mouth just like the bulls you apparently loathe.

It's amazing to me how clear Powell can be and then you listen to commentary an hour later, and you start to question whether everyone saw the same speech. Bull and bears both hear what they want to hear.

Powell: "Unemployment may need to increase for inflation to get to our 2% target"

Bear: omg he's going to bring up unemployment 100-200%, look at all the indicators rolling over, wtf are they doing.

Bull:may? He still thinks there's a soft landing out there, how tone deaf, these guys have no clue

Well i guess both of those would be bearish but the point still stands.

My favorite commentators are especially the guys who just blame everything that happened 2 years ago when you ask what the fed should do now and continually dodge the initial question . So you don't know either unless you get years of hindsight is what you're saying? Convenient.

Best case scenario imo the way things are heading I think we are going straight into depression if the ship isn’t righted fast.

Good lord, you linked the most idiotic 5 mins of the testimony. And apparently all you did was read the dumbass quote on the video, didn't even watch it.

I'm the only one here who DID watch it and started an entire thread to discuss it.

Then tell us all again where Powell says employment would rise to 7-10%. He purposefully dodged those questions from Warren and Kennedy. He never said unemployment would have to go that high. Senators were trying to put words in his mouth.

Eta - just realized I was the first response in that thread. Talking about who? Warren and Kennedy.

"Yes, the standard has been that there are recessions when the fed tries to reduce inflation"

J.K. - If history is right, unless you get some help (congress spending) in order to get inflation down from 6.4% to 4.4% the unemployment rate has to rise to 7.4%.

JPOW - "Thats what the record would say, yes"

No secret I am a huge bear and I just love all things finance.

Time will tell the truth.

But I would REALLY love to hear the case for being a bull in this environment.

I'm not even a bull for my beloved Bitcoin. All the asset classes are fricked.

At least you rewatched the interview and saw Powell never said that.

That would be a hard case to make. The only buying I'd be doing right now is to DCA or if I see a position at a good price I'd go long on.

I'm really interested in this. I'm in on some things crypto, but I'm in the technology side of it. With the run on SVB and other investment banks that have exposure to new technologies doing bad right now and with all the talk this past week about regulations, it's a very worrisome environment. That's not even touching on the rest of the financial conditions right now.
