Is there a resource for finding a fee-based financial advisor based on my location?

We are 51 years old and everything is self-directed. I need someone that can look over what we currently have to confirm that we are indeed on track for the level of retirement income that I think we can count on. I prefer it to be in person. Our situation is a bit different in that part of my planning depends on a lump sum from the eventual sale of my business. I need a set of professional eyes to let me know if I’m planning correctly. Also, assuming that we are on track with our 401k, IRAs and my business, I need advice on the best plan forward with surplus monies each month.

Do a little research and ask for referrals from those you know. You want someone who aligns with you from a size and expertise standpoint. Give a few a call and ask them about what their typical client looks like, what services they provide, and how they charge fees before you provide a ton of details on your situation.
Most fee only FAs get paid on asset based fees by managing clients money. If you are going to stay self directed than you should really be looking for someone who does a fair bit of set price financial planning or hourly rate work. Many FAs don't.

Definitely just looking for someone to simply look over our situation once a year and make recommendations. Those sorts of FAs seem awful hard to find near me here in NE Alabama.

Unfortunately, they are going to be hard to find almost anywhere. That is a much tougher business model for an FA. You might check with folks earlier in their carrier who are looking for those type of engagements.
Otherwise, you might need to be open to something via video conference with advisors who work under stated fee relationships. Wish I could point you in the right direction, but don't have any contacts up that way. Best of luck.

Best way is roll by their offices and see who drives a Ferrari. That’s got to be your guy.
