I had to amend my taxes due to a slight oversight on my part this year. I now owe. Do I wait to sign up for the IRS payment plan online until after they review the amended return I just sent in, or do I do it now? I'm not finding that answer anywhere. I figure one of you know what to do. Thanks.

Not positive but it seems like if you owe then you owe and if you owe for 2017 and haven't paid yet then you are just accruing late payment interest expense at this point. Probably not a lot (unless you owe a huge tax bill) but nevertheless I don't think they are being tolled while the amended return is being reviewed. Maybe the late payment interest isn't enough to concern you and you would rather wait until the IRS approves your return and the amount you owe even if it mean a little extra is added on to your bill.

You generally can't get an official payment plan until you have an amount owed. If you got a refund on original return and now owe on amended, it won't show up as due until the amended return is processed, which could take a couple of months.

However, you can certainly send in payments now and it will just be added to your account.
