You know I actually said that I'd pay more than just the debt if they'd agree to just delete it, and they declined. Her exact response was, "We don't take bribes."
I must be the insane one because this world just doesn't seem to make sense at all sometimes.

Best thing you can do with a collector is do NOTHING over the phone handle everything in writing.
Realize that you have what they want and therfor the ball is in your court. The collector makes their bonus based on money collected and delq %. If they do not want to coorperate then you can certainly make their job difficult. Send a no not contact letter. Send a debt validation letter. If you only owe 150 its safe that they wont try to file suit and will rely on the credit bureau to be their leverage.. Well guess what.. If they dont remove it from your credit they have NOTHING on you. If you pay it you bring the debt more current and it hurts you more. Its best to stand your ground and not pay until they offer a PFD. If you cave certainly dont pay 100%. If you are going to have it on your CR then there is no real different between paid, unpaid or settled. The date of last activity matters the most.

Yes, I understand that I've done everything wrong. Now that we've established that I'm a fool. Do you know if there's a way to get the debt deleted other than simply begging the collectors to do what they promised on the phone?
I mean after all, I paid the debt the instant I was made aware of it. Isn't that what the creditors really want? There should be some sort of carrot for that.

At this stage a your best bet is to send a letter asking them to remove it.

Look under Goodwill Example Letters (GW):
The PFD Letters would have helped you otherwise and may be useful to anyone else in your situation.

Thanks for the link. If it's not deleted as promised by March 1, I'll resort to the goodwill letter, a.k.a. begging.

Don't give them your social security number.
That is one way to limit what can get put on your credit report.
And for those that will say that's impossible....it's not impossible. With cell phones, you can get a pre-paid phone and not have to give them your SSN. Also, I think with the Wal-Mart family mobile plan (different than their pre-paid plan) you don't have to give a SSN.
Cable companies will ask for it, and even probably push you to give it to them, but I successfully got cable with multiple companies in multiple states without having to give my SSN.
And the same thing goes with utility companies. In fact, I think (though am not 100%) that public utilities cannot require a SSN in order to provide service. I have all my utilities and never gave any of them my SSN.
What is easier is to make one up, there are a couple I like to use.
