Sounds like what you need is a better skill

This but don't feel bad; my 28 year old son doesn't seem to get the concept of learning a marketable skill.

Go apply with a contractor (Turner, Jacobs, PALA Intersate, P2S, etc.) and try to get on as a helper. You will start out at nearly $20 an hour and can learn a trade such as pipefitting, boilermaking, welding and work your way up to A class mechanic. Then you will be making $30 an hour and will have a skill.

I was a superintendent for a contractor a few years ago. Our A class helpers made over $17 an hour. I was assuming the pay had risen over the last 4 years.

It may have

I just wouldn't expect a green helper to be making 20 an hour

Just talked to my buddy who still works for them. They actually make $1 an hour LESS now. Said they cut all hourly employees $1 an hour about a year and a half ago. If he has any mechanical aptitude and a few tools, he can start out as a D class mechanic, which is over $20 an hour.
