My advice would be don't get too caught up with what you're paying compared to all your buddies from LA who are going to be spending much less on rent.

Just shop around, don't sign a lease at the first place you go to (trust me it will suck ), and make sure you find a good deal for THE AREA. (So again, don't get down on yourself playing the comparison game with your LA buddies).

As Powerman mentioned, if you are saving at all its gonna get tight real fast if I'm looking at my numbers right.

I lived an hour outside of Boston for a year in Nashua, NH. The rents were more reasonable and in line with LA but still about $200 to 300 more a month for comparable space to Baton Rouge at the time if I remember right. IE a 2 bedroom at old Oakbrook was around 1k at the time (2007) I think and my NH place was around 1,200 to 1,300 with similar quality. As was just out of LSU so that's the best comparison I can make. I remember at Oak Brook I was good just having one roommate but in NH I had two to make it about the same as BR.

Is it in Boston? I live here and pay $1200 and have 1 roommate. I would say $1000 seems reasonable, that's what mine was when I moved here.

ETA: do they cover your parking? That's something else that will add up. A decent garage spot is around $200/month.

$900 is a very low estimate for Mass. He can expect to pay at least a grand for 1 bedroom, for a safe area. Mass is expensive.

As cheap as you can find and have it still be habitable. It seems to me you could put up with a lot of inconvenience for that short a time frame, and maximize your savings.

I would be thinking in terms of "How little can I pay?" rather than "How much can I pay?"

That was my estimate for a 900 sqft 2bedroom 1 bath per person estimate

$1000/mo at $41K is do-able but I wouldn't expect to make huge gains in your savings and you won't have a lot of money to throw around.

I would look on craigslist and try and find someone trying to sublet a place. At $41K you need to be aiming lower.

1 br places are sooo expensive compared to 2br/3br when you are splitting rent.

$871 for mortgage including insurance/tax, 2100 sq ft in NWA. One of the benefits of living in NWA.

Soon to gross 85k between my wife and I.

Am I confusing you with another Arky poster or are you the one with 4 car notes? I'm sorry if I confused you with someone else

You're confusing me with someone else. My parents used to be in serious debt and I said to myself from I very young age I'd never be like them when it comes to money.

I've never had a car note. Bought a car cash with deployment money. My wife had one while we were dating, it's been paid off for over a year now.

$ stresses me out if I don't have a good cushion. I know math wise me always paying everything cash doesn't make sense, I hate financing anything and hate filling out paperwork for financing even more.

Powerman, that is what I meant. 50% not 60!

Boston, NYC, & DC are nothing like Louisiana with finding places to rent. He will have to pay around $900 a month for a decent place where he will be safe

I wouldn't assume anything else. I was just answering how much I think he should pay towards rent. Whether or not he'll be living in a one bedroom or sharing a house with roommates is up to him.
