How many dont work for the man? I'm still in college but the thought of owning my own business is one that lingers in the back of my head.

What general business area are you in? How did you get started? What was the hardest part? Was it worth it?

My answers are almost the same as Broke's, except I got my start from a small insurance company 10 years ago. The hardest part is working for the toughest boss on earth ( myself). It was definitely worth it.

Yes.

Own a cabling company.

Took the leap of faith.

Finding and keeping good people.

Absolutely.

I'm self-employed.

"How many dont work for the man? "

Still have to deal with people so sometimes you deal with lazy, crazy or stupid.

"What general business area are you in?" Doctor
"How did you get started?" Lots of school and training followed by Army career
What was the hardest part? Internship, but they have made it more humane
Was it worth it? I think so, but others may not

Why the desire to be independent? Obviously you expect better pay?

Do you guys feel it makes it more difficult to bring in new business without the big names? What about the lack if tools/research?

Dang. Stutter much?

I went independent to have more flexibility and better pay. As for the lack of big name. I am not convinced that the name Merrill lynch is what it used to be. My firm may not have the global name like a Merrill, but we do ok.

My wife and I never went to college. We co-own a daycare that averages around 100 kids but we both still work other jobs

How many dont work for the man?
We still do, I'm a warehouse supervisor and she works for the state. BTW your customers will be your new boss

How did you get started?
We were always wanting to start a biz. and we researched daycares and went in debt

What was the hardest part?
just getting started and getting out the black to show a profit

Was it worth it?
definitely, we still work but it helped put my daughter through school and my son is at LSU now

we also are CPR instructors which is some great extra money

We both came from poor families and college wasn't an option coming out of high school. We are both in our mid 40's and hope to open another business one day

good luck to you Jimbeam

I'm in agribusiness. Not farming, but somewhat related. I fell arse-backward into it. I work about two hours a day, from home, in my underwear. The rest of the day I'm killing time on TD, waiting to see the results of my two hours of work.

The best part of owning my own business is that I get to pick which 80 hours a week I work

I do both, work for fire dept and on days off do auto glass. I work solo in auto glass doing mobiles and hope to one day open up shop.

Training alot, doesn't sound like much but there is alot of liability that comes with it and you need to know your shite.

quote:

What was the hardest part?

Dealing with insurance companies and lifting windshields all day setting them in the car by myself gets taxing after awhile.

Was it worth it?

I hope I plan on retiring at 20 years (I know people on here don't wanna hear that since I'm "stealing" money from the tax payers) with the fire dept and opening up shop to work full time. I've only got 10 years in of fire service and have been doing windshields for about 4.
