I have a buddy who has 3 years of experience and a Bachelors degree. He applied for a management job and this company hires both internally and externally. When they went in for face to face interviews, it was him and a non degree carrying employee that's been with the company for 7 years.

A day later, my buddy gets the job. He's been at work for about 6 months now and tells me everyday how much the internal employee and his buddies make his work life miserable because of what I would assume as jealousy.

My take on it is that I believe degree carrying employees hold a lot more weight than someone who doesn't have one no matter the experience. I see this type of situation in my fathers company all the time and he 95% of the time hires employees with degrees only.

is this a smaller company or a large corporation. I am with a large corporation. I can't see us hiring a manager position externally with only three years post bachelor's experience. most managers in the company I work for are in their 30's at least.

anywho, he needs to set clear expectations with his employees. if his employees still underperform, he needs to talk to his boss about letting some of them go and replacing them. yes, that is a tough thing to do but....welcome to management. any monkey can manage a science team consisting of Albert Einstein, Edwin Teller, Niels Borr, Robert Oppenheimer, etc etc....you get the point.

I disagree. Each job, situation, and applicant should be looked at independently. If the applicant without a degree has 15 years experience and has always been a high performer then they are probably qualified for the job over some 25 kid with no experience. Your blanket statement does not apply to every situation, like most blanket statements.

Hiring the best candidate sometimes means hiring someone with less experience. Sometimes it means hiring someone with more experience. Years of experience, degrees, certifications, etc. are just pieces of a much bigger puzzle.

:kige:

Also, are we to assume your buddy's degree is related to the field he's working in or is it just some random non-related degree?

You'd be surprised. Some (although certainly not all) very talented people are real prima donnas who just can't get along with each other.

This statement alone lets me know you are very young and naive.

Experience > Degree 100% of the time
